Description

Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Brown' is one of the most popular and widely kept Cryptocoryne varieties, producing wavy, attractively textured leaves in a rich brown to bronze-brown tone. The colour is warmer and earthier than green Crypt varieties, making it particularly effective alongside driftwood and natural-style layouts. It's a medium-sized Crypt reaching 15–30cm depending on conditions.

Low light, no CO2, planted in substrate. Root tabs or a nutrient-rich substrate support good growth. Like all Crypts, temporary leaf melt can follow being moved — leave the rhizome in the substrate and it will regrow. Once established it is vigorous and reliable, producing runners and forming dense colonies over time.

Plant roots in the substrate without burying the crown. Foreground to midground positioning in most aquariums.

Arrived quickly and healthy looking plant. Beautiful leaf shape with a nice muted dark green colour with hints of brown. Not easy to see the contrasting stem colour yet but hopefully as it matures this colour will show more. Was a bit difficult to divide but got several plants from 1 pot. Planted in my new aquarium the day it arrived. Only been in a week so too soon to tell how it's doing for sure but so far so good.

Like all Crypt's it's very fussy when moved, so expect many leaves to die off when you plant. The good news it that when they grow back they have some fantastic small dark green/brown leaves. It's really contrasting well with my very bright greens that I get from my other plants.

Hasn\'t grown as quickly has I\'d hoped, Plant arrived in good condition, there was a few leaves that were damaged (eaten) and a couple of broken stems but out of all the plants is the one i\'m least impressed with.

Hopefully in the next few weeks the plant will start to grow taller as per the description.

Helpful details before you buy.

What is 'crypt melt'?

When moved, Cryptocoryne sometimes dissolve their leaves. This is normal. Leave the rhizome in the substrate and new leaves will regrow.

Is wendtii Brown a good beginner Crypt?

Yes — wendtii is one of the most adaptable and reliable Cryptocoryne species. The Brown form is no more demanding than the green forms.

Does it need CO2?

No — grows without CO2. Root tabs or a nutrient-rich substrate are more important.

What size does it reach?

15–30cm depending on conditions and light. In lower light it tends to stay more compact.

How do I plant it?

Plant roots in the substrate without burying the crown. It spreads via runners and forms a dense colony over time.
