    Description

    Echinodorus horemanii is a stately sword plant from South America, producing broad, dark olive-green leaves that can reach 40–50 cm in length. It forms a dense, spreading rosette suited to larger aquariums where it can develop to its full potential.

    This species is uncomplicated to keep, tolerating a wide range of water conditions from soft and slightly acidic to moderately hard. It grows well under medium lighting without the need for CO2 injection, drawing nutrients primarily from a rich substrate.

    Supplied as an established potted plant, Echinodorus horemanii makes a commanding background specimen in aquariums of 200 litres or more. Its broad leaves provide natural cover for fish and spawning sites for cichlids and other bottom-dwelling species.

    Great plant, well packed, and as usual for echinodorus sp roots were growing through the pot :D It's going to be a "specimen" plant so having only two plants in the pot wasn't a problem - especially considering just how large it has the potential to grow. So trimmed the roots back, and planted, had some die back / melt in the first week, but new growth was appearing.

    Makes a nice change from the usual Blehrae in a Amazonian biotope.

    How large does Echinodorus horemanii grow?

    In good conditions it can reach 50 cm or more in height with a spread to match. It is best suited to aquariums of at least 200 litres.

    Does it need CO2 injection?

    No. It grows well without added CO2, feeding mainly through its roots from a nutrient-rich substrate.

    What lighting does it prefer?

    Medium light is sufficient. Too little light causes slow, sparse growth; very bright light may encourage algae on the broad leaf surface.

    Can it be trimmed?

    Yes. Remove older or damaged outer leaves at the base. The plant will continue sending up new leaves from the centre of the rosette.

    Is it suitable for a community aquarium?

    Yes. It is peaceful and compatible with most fish. Its large leaves offer natural cover for shy or territorial species.
