Echinodorus rubin is one of the classic large red sword plants, producing broad, deeply coloured leaves in rich ruby-red to dark maroon that retain their intensity even as the plant matures. It is a vigorous grower capable of reaching 40–50 cm in height, making it a commanding background specimen in any spacious planted aquarium.
Care is straightforward. Medium light and no CO2 injection are all it needs to thrive, though its size means it benefits greatly from a nutrient-rich substrate or regular root tabs to fuel the extensive root system. Good light and iron in the substrate help sustain the deep red pigmentation on both new and mature leaves.
Supplied as an established potted plant, Echinodorus rubin suits aquariums of 200 litres or more. Its bold colouration and large stature make it one of the most visually impactful background plants available, providing an immediate and lasting focal point in the planted aquarium.
