Description

Echinodorus rubra is a classic red sword plant cultivar valued for its rich, warm leaf colouration. Leaves emerge in shades of red-brown to deep crimson before gradually settling to a darker, more muted tone as they age, while new growth continuously refreshes the colour in the centre of the rosette.

It is easy to maintain, requiring only medium light and no CO2 injection to grow well. Like all Echinodorus, it is a strong root feeder and benefits from planting in a nutrient-rich substrate or having root tabs placed near the base every few months. Iron-containing fertiliser helps sustain the warm red pigmentation.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Echinodorus rubra reaches 30–45 cm in height and is best positioned as a background plant in aquariums of 150 litres or more. It makes a reliable, long-term addition to planted layouts where bold red foliage is desired without the complexity of high-tech maintenance.

How does Echinodorus rubra differ from rubin?

Both are large red sword plants. Rubra tends to have slightly warmer red-brown tones compared to the deeper ruby-maroon of rubin, though both are excellent low-maintenance cultivars.

Does it need CO2?

No. It grows reliably under medium light without CO2 injection. Root tabs and a nutritious substrate are more important than CO2 for this species.

How large does it grow?

It can reach 30–45 cm in height, making it suitable for aquariums of 150 litres or more.

Will the colour hold long term?

New growth always shows the strongest colour. Ensure consistent lighting and regular root fertilisation to keep new leaves coming through vibrant.

Is it compatible with all fish?
