Description

Egeria najas is a slender, fast-growing stem plant from South America, producing whorls of very fine, narrow leaves along tall, freely branching stems. Its lighter, more delicate structure makes it a visually distinct alternative to the similar Elodea densa, and its vigorous growth enables it to absorb excess nutrients from the water column efficiently.

It is one of the easiest stem plants to keep, growing under low to medium light without CO2 injection. Its rapid uptake of nutrients helps suppress algae in newly established aquariums or tanks with heavier fish loads, making it a practical as well as decorative choice.

Supplied as two bunches, Egeria najas is best planted in groups at the back of the aquarium where it quickly forms a lush, bright green background. Regular trimming keeps growth compact and encourages dense, bushy regrowth from each cutting.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

How is Egeria najas different from Elodea densa?

Both are similar South American oxygenating stem plants. Egeria najas has slightly finer, narrower leaves and a lighter, more delicate appearance, while Elodea densa has slightly broader whorls of leaves.

Does it need CO2?

No. It grows vigorously under low to medium light without CO2 injection, making it ideal for low-tech aquariums.

Can it be planted or floated?

It can be gently pushed into the substrate or left floating. Planting gives a more structured background look; floating provides surface cover for fry and shy fish.

How fast does it grow?

Very fast under good light and nutrients. Regular trimming is needed to prevent it outcompeting smaller plants in the aquarium.

Is it suitable for coldwater aquariums?

Yes. Like Elodea, Egeria najas tolerates cooler temperatures and can be used in coldwater and temperate set-ups as well as tropical aquariums.
