Description
Eleocharis montevidensis is a taller-growing hairgrass from South America, producing fine, grass-like stems that reach 20–40 cm in height. Unlike the low-growing dwarf hairgrass varieties, montevidensis creates a mid to background grassy effect that adds a naturalistic, meadow-like quality to planted aquariums with more vertical depth.
It is straightforward to keep, growing under medium light without CO2 injection. A nutrient-rich substrate supports healthy root development, and the plant responds well to iron supplementation via liquid fertiliser or root tabs. Trimming the stems occasionally encourages denser regrowth from the base.
Supplied as an established potted plant, Eleocharis montevidensis suits aquariums from 80 litres upward where its height can be appreciated. It works well as a mid to background grass element in nature aquarium layouts, creating a distinct textural contrast alongside broad-leafed plants.

Customers praised this aquarium plant for arriving in "excellent condition" with quality packaging and fast delivery. Many noted it's "hardy," thrives well, and adds depth to tanks. Fish and shrimp enjoy it. However, some found it shorter than expected, and one customer struggled with browning despite proper care.
- Excellent plant, thrived when others died so must be hardy.
- Plants arrived quickly and in really good condition - couldn't be more pleased
- Gives the tank a feeling of more depth and a very nice 3D look and feel.

Plants arrived quickly and in really good condition have since ordered more - couldn't be more pleased
Healthy plant but not as tall as expected. Have moved to front of aquarium hoping it will grow.
Got 5 plants from each pot of this, soon gets bushy again and looks great. My Discus love to swim in and out of this.
Arrived well packaged in good condition and divided into four bunches.
Good healthy plants. Hope they do better than ones bought elsewhere. Think I split them too small so have left these larger when planting
Struggling with this plant. 4th lot I’ve bought but turn brown and die off. I supply everything needed but not doing good... plants come in excellent condition and packaging so no way dissing Aquaessentials!
Arrived in excellent condition, both striking plants and doing really well in the tank
Beautiful plant, good condition and fast delivery
Very well packed and great quality!
Excellent plant, thrived when others died so must be hardy. The shrimp love it in particular.
I love this plant and the fish love it too! hoping to get more. Good size and great condition when it arrived
Just planted this in my tank, foreground and background. It really does at depth and its safe to say its now my favourite. As always all the plants I ordered were in great condition, well packaged and received quickly.
very good condition
Thank you very much. I've just received it today. Although it has been sent overseas for about 7 days from UK to Thailand, it reach my hands alive ! Great ! I really love this plant. ^_^
I purchased this as an alternative to the Vallisnerias. I planted it in small random bunches in the background and mid-ground areas of my 240 liter tank. The plant does very well, is easy to keep and gives the tank a feeling of more depth. Especially when in the stream of the filter output and powerhead.
I had a friend round and he asked if I have a lens in the tank as adding this plant gave my scape a very nice 3D look and feel.
I'm very pleased with it.
Product FAQs
Helpful details before you buy.
How is Eleocharis montevidensis different from dwarf hairgrass?
It grows much taller — up to 40 cm — compared to the low-growing dwarf forms. It is used as a mid to background grassy element rather than a foreground carpet.
Does it need CO2?
No. It grows well under medium light without CO2 injection, though CO2 can accelerate growth and produce denser stems.
What size aquarium suits it?
Aquariums from 80 litres upward, particularly those with height of at least 40 cm, allow the full stature of this plant to be appreciated.
How do I plant it?
Remove from the pot, divide into smaller clumps, and plant in a nutrient-rich substrate with space between clumps. It will spread slowly via side shoots over time.
How do I keep it looking tidy?
Trim stems to the desired height with sharp scissors. The plant will regrow from the base, becoming denser over time with regular trimming.
