    Description

    Eleocharis parvula is a miniature hairgrass closely related to Eleocharis acicularis, producing extremely fine, short stems that stay compact and low, typically reaching just 3–7 cm in height. This makes it one of the smallest and most delicate aquarium carpeting plants available, ideal for creating a refined, close-cropped foreground.

    It grows under medium light without CO2, though carpeting is a slow process without supplemental carbon dioxide. CO2 injection and a nutrient-rich substrate accelerate lateral spread via runners considerably. It is a rewarding foreground plant for patient hobbyists who want a delicate, natural carpet effect.

    Supplied as an established potted plant, Eleocharis parvula suits aquariums from 30 litres upward. Planting in small tufts spaced 2–3 cm apart across the foreground allows the runners to fill in the gaps over several weeks, building into a fine, even grassy carpet.

    I cant EVER get to terms with these hairgrasses! They always start going sideways and down, they're quite tall and don't spread that fast. Im guessing i would need more of them planted closely for it to look nice. Better off getting something else in my opinion. Also, every batch i got has had weird hair-like stuff growing on them after a week

    How is Eleocharis parvula different from Eleocharis acicularis?

    Both are dwarf hairgrass varieties. Parvula is generally slightly shorter and finer, with a more compact, delicate appearance, though the two are very similar in care requirements and use.

    Does it need CO2 to carpet?

    No, but carpeting is much slower without CO2. With CO2 injection and good light it spreads via runners and fills in within a few weeks.

    What substrate is best?

    A fine, nutrient-rich substrate such as an aqua soil works best. In plain gravel, add root tabs to supply the nutrients the plant needs at root level.

    How do I plant it for a carpet effect?

    Divide the plant into small clumps and plant them 2–3 cm apart across the foreground. The runners will connect the clumps over time into a seamless carpet.

    Is it suitable for nano aquariums?

    Yes. Its very small size makes it one of the best foreground options for nano tanks from 30 litres upward.
