Description
Hottonia palustris, the water violet, is a delicate European aquatic plant producing fine, pinnate leaves arranged along tall, branching stems. It is one of the few native European species used in the aquarium hobby and brings a refined, feathery texture to planted layouts that is quite different from the more commonly available tropical stem plants.
It is a moderately demanding species, preferring cooler, clear water with medium light and ideally some CO2 supplementation. It can be floated to form surface cover or rooted in a sandy or fine substrate. It tends to do best in unheated or cool-water aquariums rather than tropical set-ups above 22°C.
Supplied as an established potted plant, Hottonia palustris suits temperate aquariums, cold water or pond set-ups, and cool planted tanks from 60 litres upward. Beautiful little plant; unfortunately, it died within a few weeks, the leaves seemed to be melting away, it just disappeared. When I saw that it wasn't happy I moved it to a shadier part of the tank, but it was too late, never recovered. Other than too much light, I can't think of anything else why it died. Could it have been hard water?

I've failed to get Hottonia to grow for about three years now and consequently regarded it as difficult, having tried pond edge and aquaria with added nutrients. This time I have had surprising success. The Aqua Essentials plants were in excellent condition to start with and this time I tried a small aquarium in the house to keep a careful eye on them. The room faces East and gets the morning sun. The procedure was:
1. clean the tank and remove ALL duckweed plants, fronds and seeds,
2. Put in a good deep (2") layer of the aquarium soil (supplier address included).
3. Top of with very carefully washed (several washes using a hose) soft sand. This was a minimal layer (about 1/2" or less).
4. plant Hottonia by pushing roots through the sand into the soil (tried forceps and finger).
5. plants were planted separately...not in a bunch.
6. matured water was added from a rainwater butt.
7. depth of water was about 2-2 1/2" only as I'd nticed that these plants are cultivated with only the roots in a nutrient solution
8. Within a week or so they have begun to grow up from the water surface (all of them) and towards the light.
9. They look very healthy.

Is Hottonia palustris a tropical or coldwater plant?
It is a temperate species that prefers cooler water. It is best kept in unheated or cool-water aquariums below 22°C and is also suitable for outdoor ponds.
Does it need CO2?
CO2 supplementation is beneficial and helps produce the most compact, healthy growth. It can be kept without it but may grow more slowly.
Can it be floated or does it need to be planted?
It can be floated or gently anchored in a sandy or fine substrate. Floating it is effective for providing surface cover in cooler water set-ups.
Will it grow in a tropical aquarium?
It is not ideally suited to consistently warm tropical temperatures above 22–24°C and tends to decline over time in heated tanks.
Is it native to the UK?
Yes. Hottonia palustris is native to Europe including the UK, where it grows in clean ponds, ditches, and slow-moving waterways.
