    Description

Hygrophila corymbosa is one of the most widely kept and beginner-friendly stem plants in the aquarium hobby. It produces large, lance-shaped to oval leaves in pairs along sturdy, upright stems, growing vigorously in almost any aquarium condition and quickly establishing itself as a reliable, easy-to-maintain background plant.

It is highly tolerant, thriving under low light without CO2 and adapting to a wide range of water parameters including hard and alkaline water. Its fast growth rate helps to stabilise new aquariums by rapidly absorbing excess nutrients, and it serves as a useful indicator plant for assessing whether conditions in a new set-up are supportive of plant life.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Hygrophila corymbosa suits aquariums from 60 litres upward. Regular trimming keeps it from dominating the layout — cuttings replanted at the base root easily and continue growing, maintaining a full, dense background planting with minimal effort.

    Leafy and hardy

Provides beautiful background foliage, and somewhere for the fishes to hide behind. I like all the hygrophilas, but this one was new to me in a boxed set, and I prefer it now to the Anubias I used to buy.

A tough little plant that does well, without making much fuss! It's a nice mid-tank feature, providing some shelter and interest for the fishes. They seem to forage in the pots quite a bit, but the plants don't mind! Always a plus point!

This is a handsome plant, with lovely waxy leaves and a compact habit, but I may not use it again. My fishes are very boisterous, and it keeps getting knocked over, despite being anchored with stones. So far, this hasn't obviously affected its growth, but I hate to see it lying on its side.

Arrived in good condition, had to be pruned back and split as it was so tall. It is recovering nicely and nearly ready for its first in tank pruning after one week in my non CO2 planted tank.

I am over the moon with my purchase from aqua essentials. The corymbosa was in superb condition when it arrived and the plant was well established. The root system was extensive and healthy. The leaves were a nice colour and vibrant . I ordered 2 corymbosa but received a guanenis instead of 2 corymbosa. And I must say those 2 go well together in aquarium. I would recommend this plant to anyone looking for a nice and easy to care for foreground plant.

    Thanks aqua essentials

Arrived in excellent condition, it's a brilliant and very versatile plant. Can be very fast growing, depending on your light and CO2 etc. Gets very dense with a lot of offshoots and many leaves if you leave it to it's own devices. Propagating it is easy, just cut the top off and replant it, it will pick back up very quickly, and the old bit will grow from where you cut it.
Bear in mind that it can get quite a lot taller than is indicated in the picture, mine arrived quite a bit taller. All 5 of the stems in the bundle were healthy and strong and started growing very soon after their introduction. Easy plant and highly recommended.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

Is Hygrophila corymbosa suitable for beginners?

Yes. It is one of the easiest aquarium plants to keep and is almost always recommended to hobbyists starting a planted tank.

    Does it need CO2?

No. It grows vigorously under low light without CO2, making it ideal for low-tech, budget-friendly planted aquariums.

    How fast does it grow?

Very fast under good light. In a new aquarium it can put on several centimetres of growth per week, which makes trimming a regular task once it is established.

    How do I propagate it?

Simply trim stems to the desired height, then replant the cut section in the substrate nearby. It roots within a few days and continues growing.

    Will it help with algae?

Yes. Its rapid nutrient uptake helps to outcompete algae for the phosphates and nitrates it needs, particularly during the cycling phase of a new aquarium.
