Description

Lilaeopsis mauritiana is a rare carpeting plant native to Mauritius, producing fine, grass-like leaves that spread slowly to create a low, natural-looking foreground carpet. Discovered in 1992 by Holger Windelov of Tropica, it is unique to the island and remains one of the more unusual foreground plants available to aquarium hobbyists.

Unlike most carpeting plants, Lilaeopsis mauritiana tolerates lower light levels, making it more accessible for low-tech aquariums. CO2 is not essential but will accelerate its naturally slow spreading rate. Regular trimming is important — cutting the leaves encourages lateral spread and helps the plant build a denser, more compact carpet over time.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Lilaeopsis mauritiana suits aquariums from 40 litres upward. Patient hobbyists who invest time in regular trimming will be rewarded with a characterful, fine-textured foreground that is distinctly different from more commonly available carpeting plants.
