Description

Limnophila aquatica, known as giant ambulia, is one of the most spectacular stem plants available for planted aquariums, producing large whorls of finely divided, bright-green leaves along tall stems that create a lush, almost tree-like silhouette. Under ideal conditions it is one of the most visually impressive background plants in the hobby.

It is a demanding species requiring bright light and CO2 injection for compact, vivid growth. Under lower light, leaves become smaller and more sparse, losing much of the plant's visual appeal. A nutrient-rich substrate and regular liquid fertilisation support the vigorous growth the plant is capable of when conditions are right.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Limnophila aquatica suits aquariums from 100 litres upward with bright lighting and CO2 injection. Used as a background specimen, it creates an instantly recognisable and visually striking backdrop that rewards the experienced planted aquarium hobbyist who can meet its higher care requirements.

Plant itself was in great condition and of a good size, though it's not my most favourite looking when compared to the other options available as the leaves/stems tend to naturally curl rather than grow tall. Fine for mid ground but probably wouldn't use for the background again.

Is Limnophila aquatica easy to keep?

It is moderately demanding. Bright light and CO2 injection are needed for the compact, lush growth it is known for. It is best suited to hobbyists with experience in high-tech planted aquariums.

Does it need CO2?

Yes. Without CO2 the plant grows slowly and loses the dense whorled structure that makes it attractive. CO2 injection is important for good results.

How large does it grow?

It can grow quite tall — stems regularly reach 40–60 cm under good conditions. Regular trimming keeps it in bounds and promotes bushy side branching.

How do I propagate it?

Trim stems and replant the cuttings in the substrate. They root readily and continue growing, allowing you to extend a background planting.

What aquarium size suits it?

Aquariums of 100 litres or more with good depth and bright lighting give it the best conditions to develop into its impressive potential.
