Description
Lobelia cardinalis Dwarf is a very compact form of Lobelia cardinalis, producing the same distinctive spoon-shaped leaves with green upper surfaces and purple-red undersides in a notably smaller rosette. It stays low and restrained, making it one of the most practical Lobelia forms for foreground planting in planted aquariums of any size.
Medium light and CO2 supplementation produce the most compact, vividly coloured growth. A nutritious substrate supports healthy root development, and regular liquid fertilisation keeps the leaves vibrant over time. It can be grown without CO2 in a well-lit aquarium but may grow slightly more loosely.
Supplied as an established potted plant, Lobelia cardinalis Dwarf suits aquariums from 30 litres upward. Planted in small groups in the foreground, it provides a distinctive low-profile colour accent that works well in nano aquariums and larger layouts alike where a compact, two-toned foreground accent is required.

Customers praised this aquarium plant for arriving in "great condition" with healthy growth. Shoppers appreciated the bushy, vibrant green appearance and noted it's "ideal for foreground" placement. Most reported quick growth and successful establishment, though one customer mentioned it didn't survive when attached to wood. "Fiddly to plant" initially but thrives in various tank setups.
- Really pretty, branching well from the base. Thriving in my low tech, medium light tank.
- Large enough to be divided into 3 prior to planting, giving me more plants.
- Arrived in prime condition with three good sized plants. Lots of healthy new growth seen.

Arrived in great condition as is the norm for tropica plants. A bit fiddly to plant, but after some perseverance it is now growing well and starting to produce shoots. Looks good mid-foreground as a feature. My corydoras love weaving through it.
Plant arrived quickly and well packaged! Looks great in tank and adds instant impact, thanks!
Arrived well packed. Plant condition appears ok, plenty of root. Now planted in the aquarium, looks good.
Very good quality ideal foreground plant
Great quality really healthy. Started growing in no time.
I'm new to planted aquariums so ordered a range of plants to try and this is my favourite by far. It's really pretty, branching well from the base and I got a huge number of stems to plant. It's absolutely thriving in my low tech, medium light tank and I've already had to trim and replant after only 2 weeks. If you want a bushy, vibrant green plant this seems like a good choice!
First time purchasing and growing this plant. Very healthy and looks lovely in the tank.
I just love aquqessntials plants, I can honestly say everyone that I have bought from them, are looking beautiful in my aquarium. They never disappoint.
Good busy plant growing strongly after one week.
Plants arrived in first class condition and are growing away well.
Superb quality plants, as always.
Excellent plants. They were large enough to allow the plants to be divided into 3 prior to planting, giving me more plants. They are growing well to give a vivid green carpet at the front of my 100l tank. I am adding liquid carbon and micronutrients daily. The free 'Tropica quick guide' included with the plants was really helpful in showing how plants should be prepared prior to planting.

Product FAQs
Helpful details before you buy.
How small does the Dwarf form stay?
It typically stays under 10 cm in height, making it one of the more compact Lobelia varieties and suitable for the foreground of aquariums from 30 litres upward.
Does it need CO2?
CO2 is recommended for compact, vivid growth. Without it the plant grows more loosely, though it can still be maintained in a well-lit aquarium.
Is it suitable for nano aquariums?
Yes. Its compact, low-profile form makes it well suited to nano tanks where the standard or Mini forms might grow too large.
Does it have purple undersides like the standard form?
Yes. The distinctive two-toned leaf colouration — green above, purple-red below — is retained in the Dwarf form.
How do I propagate it?
Remove side shoots that develop at the base of the plant and replant them in the substrate. They root readily and continue growing.
