Description
Ludwigia glandulosa is a striking red stem plant from North America producing elongated, lance-shaped leaves in deep burgundy to purple-red — among the most intensely coloured aquarium plants available. Its compact, upright growth habit and extreme colouration make it a sought-after choice for creating bold colour contrast in the midground of high-tech planted aquariums.
It is a demanding species requiring bright light and CO2 injection for the deep red pigmentation and compact growth that defines its appeal. Under lower light the leaves shift toward green and growth becomes more elongated. Iron-rich fertilisation and a nutritious substrate help maintain the most intense pigmentation on actively developing leaves.
Supplied as an established potted plant, Ludwigia glandulosa suits aquariums from 60 litres upward with bright lighting and CO2 injection. Used in the midground, its deep burgundy colouration creates a dramatic focal point that pairs powerfully with lime-green or bright-green plants placed alongside it.

What light level does it need?
Bright light is required. Under medium or low light the leaves lose their deep red pigmentation and the plant grows poorly.
How do I maximise the red colour?
Bright light, CO2, and iron-rich fertiliser are the three key factors. Ensure all three are in place for the deepest, most sustained colouration.
Is it suitable for beginners?
No. It is one of the more demanding Ludwigia species and is best suited to hobbyists with experience in CO2-injected, well-lit planted aquariums.
How do I propagate it?
Trim stems and replant the cuttings in the substrate. They root readily and continue growing. Regular trimming keeps the stems compact and maintains good colour on new growth.
