Description

Ludwigia palustris red is the warm-toned form of this adaptable species, producing oval leaves that develop attractive red to olive-red colouration — particularly on the leaf undersides and in good light conditions. It is one of the more accessible red-tinted aquarium plants, able to display warm tones without the demanding requirements of more intensely red Ludwigia species.

It grows under medium light without CO2, though the red colouration is most pronounced under good light and with iron available in the water column or substrate. Regular trimming keeps it bushy and encourages the fresh, most vividly coloured new growth. Cuttings root easily in the substrate for propagation.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Ludwigia palustris red suits aquariums from 50 litres upward. Its combination of easy care and warm reddish tones makes it a popular choice for hobbyists who want colour in their planted aquarium without the complexity of high-maintenance red stem plants.

growing nicely, hasn't 'kicked in' yet as tank in its 5th weeks or so, but growing thanks to a bit of CO2 and liquid nutrition here and there. Glad I bought it.

Beautiful red colour developing as this plant grows upwards towards the light even though I have low light in my aquarium. Fast growing, a few leaves break off now and then but attractive plant growing nicely.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

Does Ludwigia palustris red need CO2?

No. It can display warm red tones without CO2 under medium to good light. CO2 is not required, though it can enhance growth rate and colouration.

How red does it actually get?

It develops warm olive-red to brick-red tones under good light, most visible on the leaf undersides and newer growth. It is not as intensely red as Super Red or glandulosa varieties.

Is it suitable for beginners?

Yes. It is one of the more beginner-friendly red-tinted stem plants and a good starting point for hobbyists wanting to introduce red colouration into a low-tech planted aquarium.

How do I get the most colour from it?

Good medium to bright light and iron-containing liquid fertiliser will bring out the warmest red tones without needing CO2 injection.

How do I propagate it?

Trim stems and replant cuttings. They root readily and grow on continuously, allowing you to build a full background group over time.
