Description

Micranthemum umbrosum is a distinctive aquarium stem plant producing pairs of small, rounded, bright green leaves on delicate stems. Its fine-textured, bushy appearance makes it an attractive midground to background plant in planted layouts, providing a soft, airy contrast to broader-leaved species and a lighter green visual accent in mixed planting arrangements.

It grows best with medium light and CO2 supplementation, which encourage compact, well-structured growth. Without CO2 it can still be grown but tends to become more elongated and less bushy. Regular trimming encourages the plant to branch and develop a denser, more attractive form over time. A nutritious substrate and liquid fertiliser support long-term health.

Is Micranthemum umbrosum the same as Monte Carlo?

No. They are both in the same genus and have similar small rounded leaves, but umbrosum is a stem plant that grows upright rather than forming a carpet. Monte Carlo is used as a carpeting foreground plant.

Does it need CO2?

CO2 is recommended for compact, bushy growth. Without it the plant can still grow but becomes more elongated and less structured.

What is the best position for it in the aquarium?

The midground to background works well. Its fine texture and soft bright green appearance complement broader-leaved background plants.

How do I encourage bushy growth?

Regular trimming encourages branching and a denser form. Do not let the stems grow too tall before trimming — more frequent trimming produces better structure.

How do I propagate it?

Trim stems and replant the cuttings in the substrate. They root quickly and continue growing, allowing you to build a full planting group from a single pot.
