Microsorum pteropus gigantea XL is among the largest and most impressive Java fern varieties, producing very broad, deeply green, paddle-shaped leaves that can reach exceptional lengths under good conditions. When attached to a substantial piece of driftwood in a large aquarium, it creates a truly dramatic, specimen-quality focal point that few other aquarium plants can match for sheer size and presence.
It is as tolerant and undemanding as all Java fern varieties, growing well in low to medium light without CO2 injection and adapting to a very wide range of water conditions. The rhizome should be attached to hardscape, not buried in the substrate. Growth is slow to moderate, but the resulting plant is extraordinarily long-lived and grows more impressive over time.
Supplied as an established potted plant, Microsorum pteropus gigantea XL is suited to aquariums from 120 litres upward where its eventual size can be properly accommodated. It is a collector's plant and a statement species for large, established low-tech planted aquariums.

How big does gigantea XL get?
It is one of the largest Java fern varieties, with leaves capable of reaching 40 cm or more under ideal conditions. It is best suited to aquariums from 120 litres upward.
Is it as easy to care for as standard Java fern?
Yes. Despite its size, it shares the same undemanding nature as all Java fern varieties — low light, no CO2, and very tolerant of different water conditions.
How do I grow it?
Attach the rhizome to a large piece of driftwood or a substantial rock using fishing line or thread. Do not bury the rhizome. The plant will anchor its roots and grow slowly but steadily.
How fast does it grow?
It is a slow grower. Allow several months for it to establish and begin producing new leaves at its full size. Patience is rewarded with an extraordinary long-lived specimen.
Is it suitable for cichlid tanks?
Yes. Like all Java fern it is generally unpalatable to most fish and attaches to rocks, making it one of few plants suitable for harder cichlid set-ups.
