Description
Microsorum pteropus Windelov is a classic and widely loved Java fern cultivar with the unusual quality of having leaves that divide and branch at the tips into fine, lacy projections. This gives the plant an intricate, almost fern-like texture at the leaf tips that distinguishes it from all other Java fern forms and makes it a uniquely decorative choice for planted aquariums.
It grows exactly as all Java fern varieties do — the rhizome should be attached to wood or rock using thread, fishing line, or aquarium-safe glue and must never be buried in the substrate. It thrives in low to medium light without CO2 and is tolerant of a very wide range of water conditions. Growth is slow to moderate, and the plant is extremely long-lived and reliable once established.
Supplied as an established potted plant, Microsorum pteropus Windelov suits aquariums from 40 litres upward. Its finely divided leaf tips make it one of the most popular decorative epiphytic plants in the hobby, frequently used as a contrasting accent on driftwood alongside mosses, standard Java fern, and Anubias.

Microsorum windelov or windelov fern is a brilliant plant for any aquarium. I've split my pot between two tanks because the pot contains enough windelov and it looks like I've actually bought two! It's growing well in my betta tank with a temperature of 26c and it's growing well in my room temperature shrimp tank 20/22c. I've never had this plant before and I love it. I find it adds much needed texture to a tank, it's great to feature on its own on a nice rock or piece of driftwood,or you can place it in between other plants for a great look. The plant arrived with others I ordered. The quality of the windelov was superb as was all the other plants,the packaging was second to none,and they arrived without a single blemish! The delivery was fast . Aqua Essentials should be the ONLY place you think about buying from.

Plants arrived quickly and are very healthy. Only once did I get a plant from elsewhere and I got snails, never had any on plants bought here. Lesson well learned. Only place I trust.

A lovely plant, rich deep green colour. Nice and thick, doesn't really grow upwards but thickens out well. Would recommend if you've got quite a wide based tank.

Lovely plant, nice size. The goldfish don't like the taste so it is still in one piece. However, I keep securing it and the loach who clearly has an issue with where things are in the tank, keeps moving it, but it floats well and looks pretty so I am happy.

What makes Windelov different from other Java fern varieties?
The leaves branch and divide into fine, lacy projections at the tips, creating a uniquely intricate texture unlike the smooth edges of the standard or Narrow forms.
Is it difficult to keep?
No. Despite its more refined appearance, it is as easy to keep as standard Java fern — low light, no CO2, and very tolerant of different water conditions.
How do I attach it to wood or rock?
Fix the rhizome to hardscape using fishing line, cotton thread, or aquarium-safe glue. Do not bury the rhizome. The roots anchor naturally to the surface over time.
What does it look best paired with in an aquascape?
It pairs beautifully with mosses, Anubias, standard Java fern, and other epiphytic plants on the same piece of driftwood. Its lacy tips contrast well with smooth or broader-leaved species.
How does it propagate?
Small plantlets form naturally on older leaves and eventually detach and anchor themselves nearby. It is self-propagating without any effort from the hobbyist.
