Description

Nymphaea lotus, the tiger lotus, is a spectacular bulb plant from Africa and Southeast Asia producing large, round to slightly wavy lily-pad-style leaves in deep green or red-brown depending on the form, often with distinctive dark spotting that gives the plant its common name. It is a dramatic and visually imposing background plant capable of producing very large leaves that spread across the upper section of the aquarium.

It is a remarkably easy plant for its size and visual impact. Growing from a bulb, it tolerates low light and grows without CO2 injection, drawing much of its nutrition from the substrate and water column. It is a fast grower when established, so regular removal of the tallest leaves that reach the surface is recommended to maintain the desired aquarium appearance and prevent it from blocking light to lower plants.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Nymphaea lotus suits aquariums from 80 litres upward. Its bold, dramatic leaves and easy care make it a striking background feature plant for community aquariums, biotope set-ups, and low-tech planted tanks where a large, visually impressive species is needed.

Really good sized plant and healthy roots

Time will tell if it survives my giant snail... in retrospect I probably should have researched 'not a snail's favourite snack' plants...

This is a wonderfully fast growing plant, ideal for a newly planted tank. It arrived with a few small limp leaves but within two days it had perked up and I could see new shoots. After only two weeks it has grown so big that I even trimmed one leaf which had grown to more than three inches long and wide. I swear you can see it growing as you watch! The under side of the leaves are a lovely iridescent pink, it is really stunning.

Arrived quicker than stated, and was well packaged protecting the plants. I am very pleased with the plants, they had a good established root system and the leaves were healthy and unmanaged from the transit. I can’t fault this company and their plants

Love this plant, once its rooted itself nicely it will grow like crazy. If you keep cutting the long stems down it will grow nice and dense at the bottom.

What a lovely plant, where to begin, the leaves were lovely reddish and looked like freckled arrowheads as more and more have appeared and it's first proper surface lily pad has finally opened up giving a corner of my aquarium a shaded area and the cherry shrimp love to shin up and down the delicate looking, whip like stems. I love this fascinating plant if I had room I would have another. It's easy to look after, easy to grow, and fascinating thank you AE you guys are fantastic as usual.

I have had several bad experiences with this plant, which I bought In the past from my LFS, I decided to purchase this one and I listened to Dr Richards advice on how to handle and plant it, I now have a wonderful Lilly pad almost reaching the surface of the aquarium. Thank you again A E Team

Do the tiger lily have any possibility of having snails on them?

An H.

Hi, i fully checked the plant first and gently washed it before popping in my main tank

Aqua Essentials

Yes as it's only grown under water and chemicals are never used

Brian W.

No snails, but the smallest plant I've ever seen. It's just started getting little leaves, so it's survived

An H.

I thoroughly check every plant and pop them into quarantine before adding to any of my tanks. I have used aqua essentials for a long time now, had more plants than i care to admit but i always return because of high quality plants and never had any snails

I have just received my 2 lotus plants. They are beautiful. I love them. Hopefully I don't kill them😬.
I am unsure if I need to bury the bulb in the substrate or if it is more like Anubis that needs it's main growth stem above to avoid rot.
I have a low tech tank so use neutro co2 and neutro t.
I recently had to deal with my filter packing up (I didn't realise for possibly a week) and then waiting for a another week to be able to afford a new canister and it be delivered, due to the large size of my tank. All my plants have been bought by aqua essentials and seem to have suffered as I think there was a layer of dirt on their leaves and are not looking their best. Is there anything else I can do to bring them back.
Thank you
Ema

Aqua Essentials

Apologies for the delay in responding. Bulbs need to be half in half out of substrate. In terms of bringing your plants back, plenty of water changes and flow around the tank should solve that.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

Does Nymphaea lotus need CO2?

No. Tiger lotus is an easy and adaptable plant that grows well without CO2 injection, even in low light. It is a good choice for low-tech planted aquariums.

Will it take over the aquarium?

If leaves are allowed to reach the surface they can spread across the top of the water and shade lower plants. Regular removal of the tallest leaves keeps the plant manageable.

What colours does it come in?

Tiger lotus typically comes in green or red-brown forms, both with distinctive dark spotting on the leaves. The red form develops more pigmentation under brighter light.

How do I care for the bulb?

Do not bury the bulb deeply — set it on or just below the substrate surface. The roots and leaves will develop naturally from the bulb once it is settled.

Is it suitable for community tanks?

Yes. Tiger lotus is safe with all fish and invertebrates, and its large leaves provide excellent shelter for fish and fry.
