    Description

    Pogostemon erectus is a striking and architecturally distinctive aquarium stem plant producing whorls of very fine, needle-like bright green leaves arranged in tight rings around upright, pencil-thin stems. When planted in dense groups in the background, it creates an almost three-dimensional, feathery mass of fine texture that is highly effective in nature aquarium style aquascapes as a bold background element.

    It grows best with medium to bright light and CO2 supplementation for the compact, well-structured growth and vibrant colour it is capable of. Without CO2 the stems become more elongated and the fine leaf whorls less tightly packed. A nutritious substrate and comprehensive fertilisation program support healthy long-term growth.

    Supplied as an established potted plant, Pogostemon erectus suits aquariums from 60 litres upward with good lighting and CO2. Its unique needle-fine leaf whorls and upright, structured habit make it one of the most distinctive and popular background stem plants in planted aquascaping, particularly in Iwagumi and nature aquarium style layouts.

    Customers praised this aquatic plant as "stunning" with "vibrant green colour" and "excellent condition" upon arrival. Most found it thriving with proper lighting and CO2. However, concerns emerged about fragility - several noted fish and shrimp eating or damaging stems. Grows well as a background plant but requires adequate light and fertilizer; slow growth reported in low-light conditions.

    I ordered 3 of these plants, which all arrived in good condition and after planting looked great in the tank. After a couple of weeks these appeared to be settled in ok, however I then noticed from day to day that there were quite large pieces broken off and floating, and after about a month they've been completely destroyed by the fish - all stems have been broken off at substrate level. This hasn't happened to any of the other plants in the tank.

    If you have any bottom-dwelling fish I'd strongly suggest you avoid these plants as although they look nice they're clearly way too fragile to survive any passing traffic. Of course this wasn't mentioned in the description or on the linked blog post, and given that these aren't cheap plants I'm a bit upset about it. I think more should be said about which plants are suitable for different conditions / fish types.

    Update from my previous review.
    I was right this plant needed more light and fertiliser to grow at all in my tall tank.
    Increased lighting to 3 x 24w t5 and started to dose Neutro+.
    About 6 weeks after making these changes I now have a dense clump about 150mm tall and wide.
    It’s stunning and is my favourite plant so far.
    Try it for yourself but it must be fed and lit well.

    Does Pogostemon erectus need CO2?

    CO2 is recommended for compact, well-structured growth with tightly packed leaf whorls. Without CO2 the stems grow more loosely and the characteristic form is less pronounced.

    What light level does it need?

    Medium to bright light gives the best results. Under lower light the fine whorled leaves do not develop as compactly and the plant becomes more elongated.

    Is it suitable for beginners?

    It is manageable with medium to bright light and CO2 in place, but it is not the easiest stem plant and requires attention to nutrition and CO2 to perform well.

    Where should I position it in the aquarium?

    The background, planted in dense groups. Its fine, upright form creates a striking feathery backdrop that works particularly well in Iwagumi and nature aquarium style layouts.

    How do I propagate it?

    Trim stems and replant cuttings in the substrate. They root readily and continue the same compact upright growth, allowing you to build a full background group from a single pot.
