Pogostemon helferi

Pogostemon helferi, known in the hobby as downoi meaning little star in Thai, is a uniquely attractive foreground plant with distinctive star-shaped rosettes of wavy, deeply rippled bright green leaves that form a dense, spreading mat close to the substrate. Its unusual growth form and fine leaf texture make it one of the most visually distinctive foreground plants in aquascaping.

It is moderately demanding, performing best with bright light and CO2 injection for compact, well-structured growth and the most vivid leaf rippling. Without CO2 growth is noticeably slower and less structured, and the plant can deteriorate. A nutrient-rich substrate supports the root system, and liquid trace element fertilisation helps maintain leaf health over time.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Pogostemon helferi suits aquariums from 40 litres upward with bright lighting and CO2. Its star-shaped rippled rosettes and low spreading growth habit make it a unique and sought-after foreground plant in nature aquarium and biotope aquascape layouts where textural variety at the substrate level is important.
