Description
Pogostemon helferi, known in the hobby as downoi meaning little star in Thai, is a uniquely attractive foreground plant with distinctive star-shaped rosettes of wavy, deeply rippled bright green leaves that form a dense, spreading mat close to the substrate. Its unusual growth form and fine leaf texture make it one of the most visually distinctive foreground plants in aquascaping.
It is moderately demanding, performing best with bright light and CO2 injection for compact, well-structured growth and the most vivid leaf rippling. Without CO2 growth is noticeably slower and less structured, and the plant can deteriorate. A nutrient-rich substrate supports the root system, and liquid trace element fertilisation helps maintain leaf health over time.
Supplied as an established potted plant, Pogostemon helferi suits aquariums from 40 litres upward with bright lighting and CO2. Its star-shaped rippled rosettes and low spreading growth habit make it a unique and sought-after foreground plant in nature aquarium and biotope aquascape layouts where textural variety at the substrate level is important.

Attractive aquatic foreground plant with vibrant green, star-shaped leaves. Customers praised its healthy condition and generous portions upon arrival. Most reported excellent growth and easy maintenance. Some noted it's slow-growing and can be difficult to anchor initially. A few experienced issues with fish eating it or plant die-off, though often attributed to tank conditions.
- Love this plant, you get quite a lot, and the vivid green looks great against my wood
- A stunning plant. It arrived as usual, in pristine condition. 10/10.
- Very green and healthy! I definitely recommend this plant to beginners and further. So pretty!

A stunning plant.i split it into 3 smaller plants and placed it across the front.it arrived as usual,in pristine condition.
10/10.
Excellent plants arrived very quick
There was so much of it , I divided it up a lot but had to throw some out, due to having a small nano tank. The plant has since settled well and week later is already giving me new shoots and plenty growth
Arrived in fantastic condition with moisture and sturdy root protection. Already looking great in my planted tank! Will take a little while to grow and spread but worth it!
As usual Excellent quality plants and fast delivery service, highly recommended
Very nice plant. Quick delivery, would buy again.
Nice healthy plant. I have had to buy this plant 3 or 4 times to get the conditions just right, but now its thriving, highly recommend.
Plant was ok. Not many big rosettes, after a lot of tlc got it to grow well. Had to mix with a specimen from another company to get desired growth.
Very nice looking plant, its still alive after a week which is a bonus
I found it a little hard to plant them as they kept on uprooting from just shrimp walk past, but with some persistence they are now growing nicely.
The plant looked awesome in my main tank but next day it was gone just stumps remained my golden barbs had eaten it completely so I know what plants they demolish
Died almost instantly!!
Beautiful quality plants, looked great for all of 4 days - my fish destroyed most of them.
Planted nicely but was unfortunately eaten by my molly gang! Would recommend so long as it’s not eaten by your fish!
lovely plant in great condition
This one was difficult to remove from its potting medium, so I'm giving it some time to grow before being a bit tougher with its roots! For now it seems quite happy and adds some lovely texture to my tank.
Lovely little plant that is growing well in my aquarium.
I got express shipping and this lil plant was very green and healthy! Usually online you buy five plants and the seller sends you five leaves on one plant but I got at least six! Not much bigger than a thumb so far but they are growing very well. I'm not using C02, I have a cheap light and 3 minnows. I definitely recommend this plant to beginners and further. So pretty!
Really struggled with this. It arrived looking healthy enough but for some reason it never settled in my aquarium. A bit disappointed as I had high hopes it would carpet.
great little plant very slow growing but still going and relatively healthy i think my PH is a bit low it may prefer more alkaline water
Great little plant only prob i have is keeping it in the substrate once settled in no problem.
Arrived really healthy plant. Looks great in my tank, growing happily
Great little plant and growing well. Well packaged and good condition.
Good looking plant, nice colour under led lighting, i found it difficult to anchor in the substrate
Really like this little plant. We had one before and it seemed to stay compact and tidy. Our cherries seemed to like clambering about in it. After a bit of an overhaul, we lost the original and now we've got four new ones so fingers crossed they'll do as well.
The plant arrived on time. Another great item to add to my tank.
Hoping it grows like pictures.
plants came in perfect condition healthy and look well in the tank .many thanks
This is a great addition to my aquarium I bought 2 and am really pleased with them. They arrived in great condition as usual from aquaessentis.
Will it grow in sand?
We always recommend a nutrient rich substrate for optimal plant growth however they can grow in sand with the addition of fertilisers.
Product FAQs
Helpful details before you buy.
Is Pogostemon helferi difficult to grow?
It is moderately challenging. It grows without CO2 which is unusual for a foreground plant, but benefits from good lighting and nutrient-rich substrate.
Does Pogostemon helferi need CO2?
No, it can grow without CO2. However, adding CO2 or liquid carbon such as Neutro CO2 will encourage faster, denser, and more compact growth.
How tall does Pogostemon helferi grow?
Under strong lighting it stays very compact at 5 to 8cm. In lower light it can stretch to around 15cm. It typically reaches around 10cm in average conditions.
How do I trim Pogostemon helferi?
Remove whole shoots rather than cutting tips. This allows light to reach the base of the plant and encourages healthy, compact regrowth from the bottom.
Where does Pogostemon helferi originate from?
It is native to Thailand where it grows along riverbanks in nutrient-rich clay soils. It is commonly known as dao noi, meaning little star in Thai.
