Description
Sagittaria subulata is a compact, grass-like aquarium plant from North and South America producing narrow, strap-like leaves that stay relatively short and low compared to larger Sagittaria species. It is most commonly used as a foreground to lower midground plant where its tidy, grass-like form creates a neat, naturalistic effect at the substrate level.
It is an easy, undemanding plant growing well in low light without CO2 injection and tolerating a very wide range of water conditions including moderately hard and alkaline water. It spreads via runners to form a gradually spreading grass turf over time. Thinning runner-produced daughter plants keeps the foreground tidy and prevents it spreading into unwanted areas of the layout.
Supplied as an established potted plant, Sagittaria subulata suits aquariums from 30 litres upward. Its compact size, easy care, and attractive grass-like form make it one of the most practical foreground grass plants for low-tech aquariums, community tanks, and biotope set-ups where a simple, natural-looking substrate planting is desired.
