    Description

Hygrophila costata is a clean, mid-sized stem plant with oval, mid-green leaves carried in an opposite-pair arrangement along sturdy, upright stems. Less commonly seen than corymbosa but equally easy to keep, it offers a traditional Hygrophila appearance in a slightly more compact form that suits midground planting across a wide range of aquarium sizes.

It grows well under medium light without CO2 injection and tolerates a wide range of water conditions. Like all Hygrophila it is a fast grower once established, responding well to regular trimming and producing dense, bushy regrowth. Cuttings root readily in the substrate and can be replanted to fill out a planting group.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Hygrophila costata suits aquariums from 50 litres upward. Its compact habit and clean green leaf form make it a versatile midground plant that integrates naturally into both simple beginner layouts and more structured planted aquariums.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

How does Hygrophila costata compare to corymbosa?

It is slightly more compact than standard corymbosa with a cleaner, more modest leaf form. Care requirements are essentially the same — both are easy, tolerant stem plants.

    Does it need CO2?

No. It grows well under medium light without CO2 injection, making it a practical low-tech plant.

How do I keep it bushy?

Trim regularly and replant cuttings. The plant branches at the trimming point, producing a denser form over time.

    What aquarium size suits it?

It works well in aquariums from 50 litres upward and is particularly practical for medium-sized tanks where the full size of corymbosa might be too large.

    Is it suitable for beginners?

Yes. It shares the easy, tolerant nature of all Hygrophila stem plants and is a reliable choice for hobbyists at all experience levels.
