Taxiphyllum sp. Spiky, commonly known as Peacock moss, is a distinctive aquarium moss with noticeably stiffer and more pointed leaves than standard Java moss, giving it a bristling, angular appearance quite different from the soft rounded texture of most other mosses. The individual fronds have an almost architectural quality, and established growth on wood or rock is bolder and more textured than you get from rounder-leaved varieties.

Peacock moss is easy and adaptable. It grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection and tolerates a wide range of water conditions. The spiky, angular character is an inherent trait maintained across light levels and water parameters. It attaches to hard surfaces over time. Good water flow helps maintain the tidy, structured appearance. Regular trimming keeps it compact.

Supplied as a loose portion — attach to wood or rock using fine thread or aquarium-safe glue and allow several weeks to establish before removing the thread. Its angular, detailed texture makes it popular for creating visual contrast against broad-leaved plants in planted layouts and as a distinctive alternative to Java moss on individual pieces of hardscape. Suited to aquariums of 20 litres and above.

Information about growing mosses:

1. Slow growing

Mosses are well known for being relaltively easy to grow. Due to the fact they are slow growing, it means demands are low. This means less light, less fertilisers and less care.

2. Not too much light please

Because all mosses are slow growing, you can't force them to grow quicker. So brighter light and loads of CO2 won't turbo charge them - actually you'll just end up stressing them out. Whilst some will always grow faster than others, mosses take time to get to the stage you want them to be. Patience.

3. Trimming is beneficial

Like all plants, mosses need trimming with a shaprt pair of scissors so don't hold back. Avoid them getting leggy, trim them to keep their shape and they will reward you with better growth which is a deeper green and dense.
