    Choose your pot size

    • Standard (5cm pot)
    • XL (9cm pot)

Both options are the same plant. XL is a larger supplied specimen. Pot diameter is not plant height; living plants vary naturally. One selected potted plant is included.

Echinodorus barthii is a striking Echinodorus cultivar producing leaves that develop a rich red-brown to deep red tone — particularly vivid on younger growth, which can emerge a bright red-orange before maturing into the darker red-brown shade. Under good lighting the colour is at its most impressive, making this one of the more attractive red sword plants available.

Medium light, no CO2 required, planted in substrate with root tabs near the roots. Better lighting encourages deeper red colouration. Growth is reliable and the colour makes it a natural focal point in the midground to background.

Plant in the midground to background. Propagation via daughter plants on flower stems.

    XL size and care notes

Echinodorus barthii is a hybrid sword plant with distinctive rich red-brown foliage that deepens in colour with stronger lighting. New leaves emerge with a striking reddish tone before maturing to a darker bronze-green, creating a plant with visual depth and warmth rarely matched among Echinodorus. It is one of the most colourful sword plants available without specialist conditions.

It performs best in medium to bright light and benefits considerably from CO2 supplementation, which promotes richer colouration and more compact, vigorous growth. A nutrient-rich substrate or regular root tabs are important — Echinodorus are heavy root feeders. It grows in a range of water parameters and temperatures typical of tropical set-ups.

The XL version supplies a more established plant with a larger rosette and better-developed root system, giving a stronger impact from the moment it goes in. Best suited to aquariums of 150 litres and above as a bold background specimen. Remove from the pot, clean the roots, and plant the crown at substrate level without burying the growing point.

    Good Quality Plants

After trawling the Internet finally found Aqua Essentials. Glad I did as I can get live plants for aquascape, and depending on what you want a little cheaper than many other online shops. Plants arrived on time and in good condition, the echinodorus (Amazon Sword) is looking great in the tank. I only got a couple to try it out and see if they died off transitioning from emerged growth to immersed growth, plants survived and looking great. I will certainly be ordering more from this company.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

What is the difference between the pot sizes?

Choose Standard (5cm pot) or XL (9cm pot). XL is a larger supplied specimen of the same plant. Pot diameter does not describe plant height.

    Does the red colour stay?

Yes — the red-brown tone is stable, though colour intensity varies with light levels. Better lighting deepens the red.

    Does it need CO2?

No — grows without CO2. Root tabs near the roots support the best growth and colour.

    How large does barthii get?

Moderate — 20–40cm depending on conditions. Midground to background positioning in most aquariums.

    How do I fertilise it?

Root tabs near the roots — Echinodorus are heavy root feeders. Liquid fertiliser with iron also supports good red colouration.

    How do I propagate it?

Daughter plants on flower stems — detach once they have 3–4 leaves and visible roots.
