Description

Choose your pot size

  • Standard (5cm pot)
  • XL (9cm pot)

Both options are the same plant. XL is a larger supplied specimen. Pot diameter is not plant height; living plants vary naturally. One selected potted plant is included.

Add height and bold green foliage to your aquarium without a demanding care routine. Anubias hastifolia has long, upright stems and distinctive pointed leaves, making it a striking feature attached to wood or rock among shorter plants.

A taller-growing Anubias, it’s a good choice for adding structure towards the back of a larger aquarium. It grows well in low light without added CO₂, while its slow growth means less frequent trimming—ideal if you want an attractive planting that’s easy to maintain.

Standard pot supplied approximately 20–35cm tall on arrival. As a natural product, size and leaf shape will vary.

To position it, carefully remove the pot and growing wool, then secure it to wood or rock. Keep the rhizome—the thick stem from which the leaves and roots grow—above the substrate.

XL size and care notes

Anubias hastifolia XL is an exceptional specimen of the tallest Anubias species available — already established on arrival, with a long rhizome and multiple mature leaves. In a well-maintained aquarium it can eventually reach up to 80cm, making it one of the most dramatically large plants you can keep without specialist conditions.

Care is as straightforward as any Anubias: no CO2, tolerant of low light, and attached to wood or rock rather than planted into substrate. The distinctive arrow-shaped leaf blades only fully develop on mature plants — juveniles carry differently shaped leaves that gradually develop the characteristic pointed form as the plant matures.

Large hastifolia specimens are rarely available. Remove from the pot and fix the rhizome to a substantial piece of wood or rock. Do not bury the rhizome.

Slightly disapointed with the size of these plants this time as they were about half the size that I got last time. Plant's came in very good condition though.

A good, solid, robust plant with broadleaves, and helping to fill out at the back of the tank. Look good with several planted fairly close together.

I ordered and received three Anubias hastifolia plants within three days. The plants were of exceptional quality and of a good size, about 25cm. The only criticism I have is: Several of the top leaves were folded over to make it possible to fit the plastic bags they came in. perhaps a little more care next time?
as the leaves have now split and look unsightly.
Aquaessentials is a reliable and professional company to do business with I have used them in the past and will continue to do so.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

What is the difference between the pot sizes?

Choose Standard (5cm pot) or XL (9cm pot). XL is a larger supplied specimen of the same plant. Pot diameter does not describe plant height.

How tall does Anubias hastifolia grow?

Up to 40–50cm in maturity — the tallest Anubias available. One of the few Anubias suited for background placement in larger aquariums.

Does Anubias hastifolia need CO2?

No — like all Anubias it grows without CO2 and tolerates a wide range of water conditions and light levels.

How do I plant Anubias hastifolia?

Attach the rhizome to a substantial piece of wood or rock using thread or aquarium-safe superglue. Do not bury the rhizome — this will cause it to rot.

Is Anubias hastifolia suitable for community tanks?

Yes — even fish that normally destroy plants leave Anubias completely alone. The tough waxy leaves are extremely resistant to fish and invertebrate damage.

How is Anubias hastifolia different from other Anubias?

Size is the key difference. Hastifolia is significantly taller than barteri, nana, or coffeifolia, with large lance-shaped leaves that give it a commanding presence in larger setups.
