    Description

Aponogeton boivinianus is one of the most impressive background plants in the hobby — a large, fast-growing Madagascan bulb plant that can produce leaves exceeding 100cm in length under the right conditions. These specimens are supplied with leaves already established, meaning the bulb has been growing and cared for before it reaches you, giving immediate visual impact rather than requiring you to wait for a bare bulb to sprout.

The leaves are dark green, heavily bullated with a distinctive hammered-surface texture, and easily distinguish themselves from other Aponogeton species. Growth is unusually fast for a plant that requires so little: boivinianus performs well in low light with minimal water movement, though it's equally at home in higher flow. CO2 is not required.

Drop the bulb into the background and leave it — it will anchor itself by putting down roots. The plant goes through natural dormancy periods during which the leaves die back. This is part of its growth cycle, not a sign of poor health. Leave the bulb in place and new growth will resume.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

What size leaves does Aponogeton boivinianus produce?

In good conditions the leaves can exceed 100cm in length, making it one of the most dramatic background plants available. Even in average conditions it produces very large leaves.

What is the advantage of buying it with leaves already established?

The bulb has already been grown and cared for, so you get immediate visual impact without waiting weeks for a dormant bare bulb to sprout.

    Does it go dormant?

Yes — it goes through natural dormancy periods during which the leaves die back. Leave the bulb in place; it will regrow after a few weeks of rest.

Does it need CO2 or bright light?

No — it performs very well in low light without CO2. One of the most rewarding plants for low-tech aquariums.

    Where should I position it?

Background only — the leaves get very large. Simply drop the bulb into the substrate and it will put down roots and anchor itself.
