    Description

Aponogeton henkelianus is one of the most visually dramatic of the Aponogeton species, producing broad, intensely ruffled and wave-edged dark green leaves that arch gracefully through the water column. The heavy corrugation of the leaf surface creates an exceptionally ornate visual effect unlike most other aquarium plants. A mature specimen fills the background of a large aquarium with striking sculptural presence.

It grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection and benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate. Like all Aponogeton it goes through natural dormancy cycles β€” the leaves die back and the bulb rests before regrowing. This is completely normal and the plant often returns larger and healthier after each rest period. It suits large aquariums of 150 litres and above.

Supplied as a dormant bulb. Plant in a nutrient-rich substrate leaving the top third above the surface. Allow several weeks for growth to begin as the bulb comes out of dormancy. The dramatic ruffled leaves that follow make it one of the most impressive background plants available for large planted aquariums.

    Common Questions

How big does Aponogeton henkelianus get?

The broad, heavily ruffled leaves can reach 50 cm or more in good conditions. It is a large plant suited to aquariums of 150 litres and above.

How do I plant the bulb?

Plant in substrate leaving the top third above the surface. Never bury it completely β€” this causes rot.

    What is Aponogeton dormancy?

All Aponogeton go through natural rest cycles where leaves die back and the bulb sits dormant. Leave the bulb in place and it will regrow.

    Does it need CO2?

Not required β€” it grows in low to medium light without CO2. A nutrient-rich substrate is more important.

How long before it starts growing after planting?

Allow several weeks β€” the bulb needs time to come out of dormancy and begin producing leaves.
