Description

Bolbitis heudelotii, the African water fern, is a distinctive aquarium plant with deeply lobed, semi-transparent dark green leaves growing from a creeping rhizome. This nano version comes pre-attached to a small piece of driftwood, creating a compact ready-made feature well suited to smaller aquariums and nano aquascapes where the unusual leaf texture adds character and visual depth at a small scale.

Bolbitis grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection and benefits from good water movement — position it near a filter outlet for the best results. It is slow-growing but long-lived and remarkably easy once its water flow preference is met. The semi-transparent leaves are particularly striking in small tanks where they can be viewed up close.

The rhizome is pre-attached to the driftwood so no further attachment is needed — simply rinse and place in the aquarium. Position the piece where it will receive reasonable water flow. Never bury the rhizome. The nano size is suited to aquariums of 20 litres and above and works particularly well in shrimp tanks and detailed nano aquascapes.

Customers love this aquarium plant on driftwood, describing it as "absolutely great" and "beautiful." Shoppers noted it was "much bigger than expected" despite the nano size. The plant arrives healthy, though may be slightly wilted from shipping. Fish and shrimp enjoy hiding in it, making it both decorative and functional.

Much Bigger than expected

I saw this as nano and figured it would be small, it was much bigger than I expected, which was a pleasant surprise after buying plants elsewhere online, the plant was slightly wilted from travel but seems to be doing well, this is a lovely feature in my shrimp tank and they seem to enjoy this plant

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

What size tank does the nano version suit?

It is sized for aquariums of 20 litres and above, making it one of the few water fern options suitable for small and nano set-ups.

Does it need CO2?

No — Bolbitis grows without CO2 in low to medium light. Good water movement is more important than CO2 for this species.

Do I need to attach it when it arrives?

No — the rhizome is already attached to the driftwood. Just rinse and place it near a gentle water flow.

Is the semi-transparent look normal?

Yes — the leaves of Bolbitis heudelotii are naturally semi-transparent with a distinctive dark green tone. It is a normal and attractive feature of this species.

Is it safe for shrimp?

Yes, fully. The small driftwood piece also provides excellent shelter for shrimp and nano fish.
