    Description

Elodea canadensis (Canadian pondweed) is a cold-water oxygenating plant native to North America, producing dense whorls of fine dark green leaves along slender branching stems. It is one of the classic oxygenating plants for temperate aquariums and outdoor ponds, growing vigorously in cool water and providing significant water quality benefits through rapid nutrient uptake and continuous oxygen production.

It grows without CO2 injection in low to medium light and is one of the most temperature-tolerant aquarium and pond plants available β€” thriving at 10–20Β°C and surviving down to near freezing in garden ponds. It is not suited to tropical aquarium temperatures above 22Β°C and performs best in unheated or coldwater set-ups. Growth is vigorous in good conditions and regular thinning is recommended.

Supplied as two unweighted bunches. Plant groups of stems into the substrate or leave floating in open water. In a pond, simply introduce directly into the water where it establishes naturally. Remove excess growth regularly to maintain water clarity and quality.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

Is Elodea canadensis the same as Elodea densa?

No β€” Elodea canadensis (Canadian pondweed) and Egeria densa (Elodea densa) are different species. Canadensis prefers cooler water and is a better choice for temperate and coldwater set-ups.

    What temperature does it prefer?

It thrives at 10–20Β°C and tolerates near-freezing temperatures in outdoor ponds. It is not suitable for tropical aquariums above 22Β°C.

    Does it need CO2?

No β€” it grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection.

    Can it be left floating?

Yes β€” it can be floated or planted. Both work well, though planting gives a more structured background appearance.

    Does it help with algae?

Yes β€” as a fast-growing plant it competes strongly for nutrients, helping to reduce excess nutrients that would otherwise fuel algae growth.
