Description

Hydrocotyle vulgaris, marsh pennywort, is a native European aquatic plant with small, round to kidney-shaped leaves on long, slender stems. In aquariums it can be grown submerged as a floating or creeping plant, while in pond set-ups and paludariums it thrives at the water margin with leaves emerging above the surface.

It is an undemanding species, growing under low to medium light without CO2 injection. It prefers cooler water and is better suited to temperate, coldwater, and unheated aquariums than to consistently warm tropical conditions. Its modest requirements make it accessible to beginners and those managing naturalistic or native species set-ups.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Hydrocotyle vulgaris suits temperate aquariums, outdoor ponds, and pond margins where its natural creeping and floating habit can be appreciated. It provides useful surface cover and a native, naturalistic look that complements other European aquatic species.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

Is Hydrocotyle vulgaris suitable for tropical aquariums?

It is not ideally suited to consistently warm tropical temperatures. It performs best in cooler or unheated aquariums and temperate pond set-ups.

Does it need CO2?

No. It grows under low to medium light without CO2 injection, making it a practical low-tech plant for cool water environments.

Can it be grown in a pond?

Yes. It is well suited to outdoor ponds and bog gardens in the UK, where it is a native species found along pond margins and in slow-moving water.

Can it be grown fully submerged?

Yes, though it also grows well as an emergent plant with leaves above the waterline. In aquariums it can be grown floating or as a creeping submerged plant.

Is it a UK native species?

Yes. Hydrocotyle vulgaris is native to Europe including the British Isles, where it is commonly found at pond edges, ditches, and wet meadow habitats.
