What makes Hygrophila pinnatifida unusual?
Unlike most stem plants, pinnatifida grows epiphytically — attaching to wood and rock like a Java fern. Its deeply lobed leaves are green on top and red-brown underneath, which is distinctive.
Does it need CO2?
CO2 supplementation produces the richest red colouration and compact growth, but it grows without CO2 in medium light at a slower pace with less intense colour.
Do I need to do anything when it arrives?
No — both plants are pre-established on the driftwood. Just rinse and place.
Will it keep spreading along the wood?
Yes — pinnatifida spreads as a creeping stem, gradually increasing coverage along the wood surface. Trim as needed to control its spread.
Is it safe for shrimp?
Yes, fully shrimp-safe. The moss provides excellent grazing and both plants are safe for invertebrates.
