Java moss is pre-grown on a 15 x 10 cm mesh pad, creating a ready-made moss mat that can be placed directly in the aquarium without any of the preparation needed when working with loose moss. The pad provides immediate coverage and a lush, natural moss surface that shrimp and small fish use for shelter and grazing from the first day it is in the tank.

Java moss is one of the easiest plants in the hobby. It grows in low light without CO2 injection and tolerates a very wide range of water conditions. The moss on the pad can be trimmed with scissors to any shape. Multiple pads can be placed side by side for wider coverage. Growth is steady and the moss gradually thickens as it settles into its new environment.

Simply rinse and place the pad in the aquarium — no attachment, planting, or preparation needed. It can be positioned flat on the substrate, propped against hardscape, or used to fill background space. The mesh base holds it in place. Suited to aquariums of 20 litres and above wherever immediate moss coverage is wanted.

Information about growing mosses:

1. Slow growing

Mosses are well known for being relaltively easy to grow. Due to the fact they are slow growing, it means demands are low. This means less light, less fertilisers and less care.

2. Not too much light please

Because all mosses are slow growing, you can't force them to grow quicker. So brighter light and loads of CO2 won't turbo charge them - actually you'll just end up stressing them out. Whilst some will always grow faster than others, mosses take time to get to the stage you want them to be. Patience.

3. Trimming is beneficial

Like all plants, mosses need trimming with a shaprt pair of scissors so don't hold back. Avoid them getting leggy, trim them to keep their shape and they will reward you with better growth which is a deeper green and dense.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

Can I cut the pad to fit my tank?

Yes — the mesh pad can be cut to any shape or size with scissors to suit your aquarium layout.

Does it need CO2 or specialist lighting?

No — Java moss grows under standard aquarium lighting without CO2 injection. One of the most low-tech plants available.

Is it suitable for shrimp tanks?

Yes, fully. Java moss is one of the best plants for shrimp — it provides grazing surface, shelter for young shrimp, and a surface for biofilm.

How do I keep it neat?

Trim with sharp aquascaping scissors. Regular light trimming keeps the moss compact and encourages fresh, dense growth from the base.

Can I use multiple pads together?

Yes — place pads side by side for wider coverage. They can be combined in any configuration to cover as much or as little area as you need.
