Description

Nomaphila stricta fleur is a decorative form of giant hygrophila, sharing the same bold, lance-shaped bright green leaves of the standard species while producing attractive lilac-blue flowers above the waterline under the right conditions. It is one of the few aquarium stem plants that offers ornamental flowering value in addition to its role as a background plant.

Like Nomaphila stricta, it is an easy and undemanding plant growing well under low to medium light without CO2 injection and tolerating a broad range of water conditions. Fast-growing and reliable, it trims and propagates simply — cuttings root readily in the substrate within a few days and grow on continuously.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Nomaphila stricta fleur suits aquariums from 80 litres upward. Its easy care, rapid growth, and the bonus of flowering above the surface when stems reach it make it a popular and practical choice for larger planted aquariums and paludariums where the decorative fleur can be fully appreciated.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

Does Nomaphila stricta fleur actually flower in the aquarium?

Yes, when stems grow above the waterline they can produce attractive lilac-blue flowers. Fully submerged stems do not flower, but allowing a stem to emerge from the surface produces blooms.

Is it as easy as standard Nomaphila stricta?

Yes. It is the same easy, forgiving species and shares identical care requirements — low to medium light, no CO2, and tolerant of a range of water conditions.

Does it need CO2?

No. It grows reliably without CO2, making it suitable for low-tech planted aquariums and community tanks.

Is it suitable for beginners?

Yes. It is one of the easier large background stem plants, and the flowering potential gives it added interest for beginners and experienced hobbyists alike.

How do I propagate it?

Trim stems and replant the cuttings. They root within a few days and grow on vigorously. Regular trimming keeps it bushy and produces a well-structured background planting group.
