Pelia (Monosolenium tenerum) is a freshwater liverwort rather than a true moss, producing flat, lobed thalli with a fresh mid-green colour and a slightly glossy surface. Its growth form and texture are quite different from conventional aquarium mosses — more compact and visually structured — and it provides an unusual and distinctive planted accent when established on rock or wood surfaces or used to cover foreground areas of the substrate.

Pelia is easy and adaptable. It grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection and tolerates a broad range of water parameters. It attaches to hard surfaces via small holdfast structures and spreads gradually over time. Being denser and heavier than most aquarium mosses it is less likely to be disrupted by water flow, making it a practical choice where lighter mosses would shift.

Supplied as a loose portion — attach to wood or rock using fine thread, aquarium-safe glue, or simply weight down with a small stone and allow it to anchor naturally over several weeks. Suited to aquariums of 20 litres and above and popular in shrimp tanks for its unusual texture and strong attachment behaviour.

    Information about growing mosses:

    1. Slow growing

Mosses are well known for being relaltively easy to grow. Due to the fact they are slow growing, it means demands are low. This means less light, less fertilisers and less care.

    2. Not too much light please

Because all mosses are slow growing, you can't force them to grow quicker. So brighter light and loads of CO2 won't turbo charge them - actually you'll just end up stressing them out. Whilst some will always grow faster than others, mosses take time to get to the stage you want them to be. Patience.

    3. Trimming is beneficial

Like all plants, mosses need trimming with a shaprt pair of scissors so don't hold back. Avoid them getting leggy, trim them to keep their shape and they will reward you with better growth which is a deeper green and dense.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

Is Pelia a moss or something else?

Pelia is a freshwater liverwort (Monosolenium tenerum), not a true moss. It produces flat, lobed thalli rather than the leaf-and-stem structure of mosses, giving it a distinctly different texture.

    Does it need CO2?

Not required — Pelia grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection.

    How do I attach it?

Attach to wood or rock with fine thread or aquarium-safe glue, or simply weight it down on substrate. It anchors via small holdfast structures over several weeks.

Is it suitable for shrimp tanks?

Yes — Pelia is shrimp-safe and the compact, dense texture is attractive to shrimp for grazing and shelter.

Why is it heavier than moss?

The thalli of Pelia are denser than typical moss fronds. This makes it less likely to drift in water flow, which is an advantage in tanks with good filtration.
