    Description

Pogostemon octopus is a distinctive and somewhat unusual aquarium stem plant producing long, deeply divided, grass-like leaves arranged in whorls around upright stems. The slender, ribbon-like leaf segments give it an octopus-like or tentacled appearance that is unlike most other aquarium plants, creating a fine-textured, flowing visual effect in the background of planted layouts.

It is one of the easier Pogostemon species, tolerating medium light and growing without CO2 injection, making it more accessible than many of its demanding relatives. It is a fast grower under good conditions and responds well to regular trimming. Cuttings root readily and new growth continues with the same unusual leaf form that makes the plant distinctive.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Pogostemon octopus suits aquariums from 60 litres upward. Its easy care, unusual leaf form, and fine texture make it a practical and visually interesting background plant for a range of planted aquarium styles where something a little different from conventional stem plants is wanted.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

    What makes Pogostemon octopus distinctive?

Its leaves are long and deeply divided into narrow ribbon-like segments arranged in whorls, giving it an octopus or tentacled appearance quite unlike most other aquarium plants.

Is it easy to care for?

Yes. It is one of the more tolerant Pogostemon species, growing without CO2 in medium light and accommodating a range of water conditions.

    Does it need CO2?

No. It grows well without CO2 injection, making it suitable for low-tech planted aquariums where more demanding Pogostemon species would not perform.

Where should I position it in the aquarium?

The background works best. Its fine, flowing leaf form creates an interesting soft texture as a backdrop behind midground plants.

    How do I propagate it?

Trim stems and replant the cuttings in the substrate. They root readily and continue growing, making it easy to build a full background group.
