    Description

Pogostemon stellatus is a stunning, finely structured stem plant from Asia and Australia producing whorls of narrow, linear leaves in shades of green, pink, and pale orange that vary with light intensity. Its delicate, well-ordered growth and attractive multi-toned colouration make it one of the most sought-after background stem plants in advanced planted aquascaping.

It is a demanding species requiring bright light and CO2 injection for the compact whorled growth and the warm pink and orange tones it is capable of displaying. Under lower light and without CO2 the plant becomes green, elongated, and eventually deteriorates. A comprehensive fertilisation program with macro and micronutrients is important for long-term success with this plant.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Pogostemon stellatus suits aquariums from 60 litres upward with bright lighting and CO2. Its combination of fine texture, structured whorled growth, and warm colouration makes it a standout background specimen in high-tech planted layouts where the conditions to support it can be maintained.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

    Does Pogostemon stellatus need CO2?

Yes. CO2 is essential for compact whorled growth and the warm pink and orange colouration. Without CO2 the plant becomes green, elongated, and eventually declines.

    What colours does it display?

Under bright light and CO2 it develops warm pink, pale orange, and green tones across the whorled leaves. Colour intensity increases with light levels and CO2 availability.

Is it easy to care for?

No. It is a demanding plant best suited to experienced hobbyists with bright lighting and CO2 injection in place. It requires attention to both macro and micronutrient levels.

What light level does it need?

Bright light is required. Under medium or low light the colouration disappears and the plant does not grow in the compact, structured form it is known for.

    How do I propagate it?

Trim stems and replant the cuttings in the substrate. Regular trimming keeps the plant compact and encourages vivid colouration on actively growing new growth.
