    Description

Staurogyne repens is a popular and versatile foreground plant producing small, oval, bright green leaves on compact creeping stems that spread horizontally across the substrate. It grows denser and lower than most stem plants, making it one of the most commonly used foreground species in nature aquarium style aquascaping, particularly as a textured, compact accent plant between foreground carpets and taller midground species.

It benefits from medium light and CO2 supplementation for the most compact, well-structured growth and reliable lateral spreading. Without CO2 it can be grown but tends to grow more upright and loosely rather than spreading as a dense foreground mat. A nutritious substrate supports the root system, and regular trimming of upward-growing stems encourages horizontal spread.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Staurogyne repens suits aquariums from 40 litres upward. Its manageable care requirements, compact green form, and ability to fill foreground positions with a different texture to typical carpeting plants make it one of the most practical and widely used foreground plants across all levels of the planted aquarium hobby.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

    Does Staurogyne repens need CO2?

CO2 is recommended for compact, horizontal spreading growth. Without it the plant tends to grow more upright and less densely rather than spreading as a foreground mat.

    Does it form a carpet?

It forms a more textured, open mat rather than a true carpet like HC Cuba or Monte Carlo. It spreads and fills the foreground with compact green growth but with a more irregular surface texture.

What light level does it need?

Medium light gives good results. Under bright light growth is more compact. Under low light it grows more loosely and less horizontally.

    Is it easy for beginners?

It is manageable for hobbyists with medium light and ideally CO2. It is less demanding than carpeting plants like HC Cuba and a good entry point for foreground planting with CO2.

    How do I propagate it?

Trim stems and replant the cuttings. They root readily and continue spreading. Regular trimming of upright stems encourages horizontal rather than vertical growth.
