Plant Sizes

The image of the plant you'll be receiving is just an example of what you can expect. Each plant is unique and may vary in size and shape, so it won't be an exact match to the photo. If we provide a size guide, keep in mind that it's just an estimate and that plants can vary in size depending on the time of year.

Hygrophila corymbosa Stricta is a robust, fast-growing stem plant with large, bright green lance-shaped leaves on thick, upright stems. It is one of the most vigorous and reliable aquarium stem plants available, producing dense, lush growth that quickly fills the background of a tank. The bold, clean appearance of its foliage makes it effective as a backdrop for more delicate foreground and midground planting.

An easy plant for any set-up. It grows rapidly in medium light without CO2 injection and adapts to a wide range of water parameters and temperatures. Regular trimming keeps it in check and promotes bushier, more compact growth. Cuttings root readily when replanted, making propagation effortless and cost-effective.

The XL version arrives as a larger, more established stem with more immediate visual impact than standard cuttings. It is among the fastest-establishing stem plants available, making it particularly useful in new tanks where rapid growth helps suppress algae and builds an instant sense of scale and planting density. Plant stem cuttings directly into substrate and trim regularly to maintain shape.

Product details

1. Go large

Xl Plants are the biggest plants available to hobbyists and sometimes extremely impressive, especially in the summer time. Pots are typically 9cm+ but the range is fairly limited so if you see one you like, best to go for it.

Why is the range limited in the winter?

Plants grow much slower due to the weather and the cost to heat gigantic greenhouses. As a result, in the cooler months plants are typically 30-40% smaller than they are in the warmer months.

2. Planting up

Due to their size, they're best positioned towards the back of your aquarium. Of course, some of them will be better tied onto wood or rock (like Anubias). It is possible to leave these plants in their pots if you prefer, but we always recommend that where possible, you take them out of their pots and rockwool, and plant them in a nutrient rich soil. Bear in mind the plants may have extensive root structure but this can be trimmed prior to planting.

3. Feeding

How much food do they need?

Due to their size, larger plants need much more food than the 5cm potted plants so this has to be considered when planting.

What fertilisers should I offer?

We always recommend using both a nutrient rich fertiliser and a liquid carbon for all plants. Use Neutro T as a liquid fertiliser and Neutro CO2 for your carbon. Both are available in big bottles and if you are injecting pressurised CO2, sway the Neutro T for Neutro+.

Are root tabs needed?

If you want to get the best from your plants, so they stay strong, grow faster and produce better colours then yes. Use TerraTabs for best results. Insert 3 under each XL plant every 4 months.

Customers praised the aquarium plants as "huge" and "healthy" with "top class" quality and excellent packaging. Most found great value, though one shopper felt the XL size was smaller than expected at £31. Plants arrive "well wrapped" and thrive in tanks, with strong roots. Some initial leaf loss may occur during settling.

Hi Steve, I'm very sorry to hear you are disapointed with this plant. Sometimes this time of year they come in from our supplier a little bit smaller as with all plants they can vary in size. The plant will open up once planted in your aquarium

It’s a must have for any betta owner, I’ve got 3 male bettas tanks and all have their own in each tank. Definitely their best resting spot and to sleep. Recommend this over the betta logs or hammocks

Very nice plants

Very nice plants. Already pink in colour, they’ve started rooting into the substrate a few days after planting. Low tech tank so we’ll see how they get on but there’s no sign of melting so far and I see some new growth coming in. Very generous number of plants, just one container of these could easily cover a large tank as I managed to get about 8 plants out of mine. My tank didn’t have room for them all so will be able to give some away. Incredibly pleased, money well spent.

Product FAQs

How fast does Hygrophila corymbosa Stricta grow?

Very fast — one of the quickest-growing aquarium stem plants available. In good conditions it can add several centimetres per week, filling background space rapidly.

Does it need CO2?

No — it grows strongly without CO2 in medium light, making it one of the most adaptable and easy-going background stem plants.

How do I trim it?

Cut stems to the desired height and replant the tops as new cuttings. The original stems will branch below the cut and produce multiple new shoots.

What tank size suits it?

It works from 60 litres upward but really comes into its own in aquariums of 100 litres and above where it can form a dense, impressive background.

Is it suitable for beginners?

Yes — one of the best stem plants for beginners. It grows quickly, tolerates a wide range of conditions, and demonstrates trimming and propagation techniques simply.
