If we provide a size guide, keep in mind that it's just an estimate and that plants can vary in size depending on the time of year.

    Description

Cryptocoryne wendtii Tropica is a compact crypt cultivar with distinctively hammered leaf texture in olive-green to bronze-brown tones. The pronounced surface texture gives the leaves an almost three-dimensional quality that contrasts effectively with smoother plants in the same layout. It is one of the most widely kept and reliably performing crypts in the aquarium hobby.

An easy plant for any set-up. It grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection and tolerates a broad range of water parameters. Like all crypts it may experience leaf melt when first introduced — old leaves deteriorate as the plant adjusts — but the roots remain intact and healthy new growth follows within a few weeks. Once settled it spreads steadily via runners.

The XL version supplies a larger, more established plant with better-developed roots, which reduces the adjustment period and provides more immediate impact in the aquarium. Well suited to midground positions in tanks from 60 litres upward. Remove from the pot, rinse the roots free of rockwool, and plant into a nutrient-rich substrate with the crown at surface level.

    Product details

    1. Go large

Xl Plants are the biggest plants available to hobbyists and sometimes extremely impressive, especially in the summer time. Pots are typically 9cm+ but the range is fairly limited so if you see one you like, best to go for it.

Why is the range limited in the winter?

Plants grow much slower due to the weather and the cost to heat gigantic greenhouses. As a result, in the cooler months plants are typically 30-40% smaller than they are in the warmer months.

    2. Planting up

Due to their size, they're best positioned towards the back of your aquarium. Of course, some of them will be better tied onto wood or rock (like Anubias). It is possible to leave these plants in their pots if you prefer, but we always recommend that where possible, you take them out of their pots and rockwool, and plant them in a nutrient rich soil. Bear in mind the plants may have extensive root structure but this can be trimmed prior to planting.

    3. Feeding

How much food do they need?

Due to their size, larger plants need much more food than the 5cm potted plants so this has to be considered when planting.

    What fertilisers should I offer?

We always recommend using both a nutrient rich fertiliser and a liquid carbon for all plants. Use Neutro T as a liquid fertiliser and Neutro CO2 for your carbon. Both are available in big bottles and if you are injecting pressurised CO2, sway the Neutro T for Neutro+.

    Are root tabs needed?

If you want to get the best from your plants, so they stay strong, grow faster and produce better colours then yes. Use TerraTabs for best results. Insert 3 under each XL plant every 4 months.

Excellent plant. After buying others on line that are honestly shocking, it was refreshing to receive plants that are actually better looking than advertised. I would definately buy from here again.

    Product FAQs

What makes this different to other wendtii varieties?

The Tropica cultivar is more compact with notably hammered leaf texture. It stays smaller than many wendtii forms while retaining the same attractive bronze-olive colouration.

Will it melt when I plant it?

Melt is common when crypts are moved — old leaves die back but roots remain healthy and new growth follows within weeks. The XL pot's established root system reduces this impact.

    Does it need CO2?

No — it grows well without CO2 in low to medium light.

    How do I plant it?

Remove from the pot, rinse rockwool from the roots, and plant into a nutrient-rich substrate with the crown just above the surface.

Will it spread on its own?

Yes — once established it produces runners and gradually spreads to form a dense clump without any replanting needed.
