    Description

Echinodorus grisebachii Bleherae, commonly known as the Amazon sword, is one of the most iconic aquarium background plants in the hobby. It produces long, lance-shaped mid-green leaves in a broad, upright rosette that can span 50 cm or more across in mature specimens. Naturalistically planted it evokes the look of wild South American river habitats with an effortless, classic presence.

An easy and adaptable plant. It grows well in medium light without CO2 injection and is tolerant of a wide range of water conditions and temperatures. As a heavy root feeder it performs best in a nutrient-rich substrate with root tabs to support its large, extensive root system. Growth is steady and reliable once established.

The XL version provides a larger, more established plant with a broader rosette and better-developed roots, making an immediate statement from the moment it goes in. Suited to aquariums of 200 litres and above, positioned at the rear. Remove from the pot, clean the roots, and plant with the crown just at substrate level without covering the growing point.

    1. Go large

Xl Plants are the biggest plants available to hobbyists and sometimes extremely impressive, especially in the summer time. Pots are typically 9cm+ but the range is fairly limited so if you see one you like, best to go for it.

Why is the range limited in the winter?

Plants grow much slower due to the weather and the cost to heat gigantic greenhouses. As a result, in the cooler months plants are typically 30-40% smaller than they are in the warmer months.

    2. Planting up

Due to their size, they're best positioned towards the back of your aquarium. Of course, some of them will be better tied onto wood or rock (like Anubias). It is possible to leave these plants in their pots if you prefer, but we always recommend that where possible, you take them out of their pots and rockwool, and plant them in a nutrient rich soil. Bear in mind the plants may have extensive root structure but this can be trimmed prior to planting.

    3. Feeding

How much food do they need?

Due to their size, larger plants need much more food than the 5cm potted plants so this has to be considered when planting.

    What fertilisers should I offer?

We always recommend using both a nutrient rich fertiliser and a liquid carbon for all plants. Use Neutro T as a liquid fertiliser and Neutro CO2 for your carbon. Both are available in big bottles and if you are injecting pressurised CO2, sway the Neutro T for Neutro+.

    Are root tabs needed?

If you want to get the best from your plants, so they stay strong, grow faster and produce better colours then yes. Use TerraTabs for best results. Insert 3 under each XL plant every 4 months.

I always choose Aqua Essentials for my plants, they\'re simply the best quality. These plants were no exception, arriving well packaged and very healthy.

The only thing I don\'t like is the rock wool they come in, that\'s quite difficult to rinse off completely but that\'s very much a personal preference.

In short, Aqua Essentials will always be my first choice for plants and I highly recommend them to everyone else.

    Product FAQs

How large does Echinodorus Bleherae get?

In a spacious aquarium with good substrate nutrition it can reach 50 cm or more in height with a wide-spreading rosette. It is best suited to tanks of 200 litres and above.

    Does it need CO2?

No — it grows well without CO2 in medium light, making it one of the easiest large aquarium plants available.

    How do I fertilise it?

Root tabs or a nutrient-rich substrate are ideal. Echinodorus feed heavily through their roots and benefit more from root feeding than liquid fertilisers alone.

    How do I plant it?

Remove from the pot, clean the roots, and plant with the crown at substrate level. Do not bury the growing point or cover the centre of the rosette.

Will it produce runners or plantlets?

Yes — Echinodorus often produce flowering stems with plantlets attached. These can be removed and replanted once they have their own roots.
