Most people add lava rock to their aquarium for the look. The rough, volcanic texture catches the eye, shrimp dart into the crevices, and it stacks well with other hardscape. But lava rock earns its place in a tank through something you can’t see at all — what’s happening deep inside the rock itself.

Here’s what lava rock is actually doing in your aquarium, and how to make the most of it.

Why Lava Rock Is Different From Other Aquarium Rocks

Lava rock forms when molten magma cools rapidly, trapping gas bubbles inside as it solidifies. The result is a stone that is almost sponge-like in structure — riddled with tiny interconnected tunnels, cavities, and pores running through the entire rock.

That porosity is the key. A single kilogram of lava rock has a surface area that, if you could unfold it completely, would dwarf any similarly sized piece of smooth stone. And in an aquarium, surface area translates directly into colonisation space for beneficial bacteria.

Compare that to something like Seiryu Stone or Dragon Stone: both are beautiful aquascaping rocks, but they’re dense. Lava rock is the only common aquarium rock where biological function is built directly into the stone’s structure.

What’s Actually Happening Inside the Rock

When water flows over and through the pores of lava rock, two distinct biological zones form.

Near the surface, where oxygen is abundant, aerobic bacteria break down ammonia (from fish waste and decaying matter) into nitrite, and then nitrite into nitrate. This is standard biological filtration — the same process that happens in filter media.

But here’s what makes lava rock genuinely special: deep inside the rock, water flow slows and oxygen levels drop. An anaerobic zone forms naturally. In this oxygen-depleted environment, a different group of bacteria — denitrifying bacteria — convert nitrate into harmless nitrogen gas, which escapes the water.

This denitrification process is difficult to achieve in a standard aquarium. Most filters only manage the first stage (ammonia → nitrite → nitrate). Lava rock, used in sufficient quantity, can complete the full cycle and help suppress nitrate levels naturally over time.

It’s not a magic solution — you still need regular water changes — but a tank with good lava rock coverage tends to see slower nitrate accumulation than one without.

Shrimp Absolutely Love It

If you keep shrimp, lava rock is one of the best additions you can make to the tank — and not just because it keeps the water clean.

Shrimp constantly forage, and lava rock’s pores trap tiny food particles: biofilm, microscopic algae, decaying plant matter. Shrimp will methodically work their way over every surface of the rock, picking through the crevices. In a tank without much else to graze on, lava rock gives them something to do around the clock.

Moulting shrimp are extremely vulnerable — soft-bodied, slow-moving, and visible to any fish in the tank. The caves and deep pockets of lava rock give them somewhere to retreat for the 24–48 hours it takes for their new shell to harden. It genuinely reduces stress losses after moults.

Cherry shrimp, amano shrimp, and neocaridina varieties all thrive in a tank with a good amount of lava rock. The rougher texture and complex surface is far more useful to them than smoother decorative rocks.

Plants Grow Directly on Lava Rock

This is where lava rock goes from functional to genuinely beautiful. Certain aquarium plants — the epiphytes — don’t root in substrate at all. They attach to hard surfaces: rocks, wood, any rough texture. Lava rock is ideal for them.

Java fern, anubias, bucephalandra, and mosses all grip onto lava rock’s rough surface readily. Over a few weeks they establish themselves and grow directly from the stone, creating a completely natural look that’s impossible to achieve with smooth rock.

How to Use Lava Rock Effectively

Rinse it thoroughly first. Lava rock produces a lot of fine red/grey dust when dry. Rinse it under running water until the water runs clear before adding it to the tank. This takes a few minutes per piece but prevents a cloudiness bloom that otherwise takes days to clear.

More is better, up to a point. To get meaningful denitrification benefit, you need enough mass that deep anaerobic zones can establish. For a 60–100L tank, 3–5kg of lava rock as part of the layout gives good coverage. Smaller amounts are still beneficial for bacteria and aesthetics — you just won’t see dramatic nitrate reduction from a handful of pieces.

Placement matters for shrimp. Stack pieces to create caves and overhangs rather than laying them flat. The internal architecture you create gives shrimp more retreat space and creates more interesting anaerobic zones in the process.

You can use it in the filter too. Some hobbyists add broken lava rock pieces to their filter as biological media alongside standard filter materials. It works well in this role — the pore structure outperforms most ceramic filter media at a fraction of the cost.

Common Questions

Does lava rock raise pH? Slightly, in some cases, and only in soft water. The volcanic minerals in lava rock can leach small amounts of calcium and magnesium, which buffers pH upward marginally. In most UK tap water (which is already moderately hard), this effect is negligible. If you keep very pH-sensitive species in soft, acidic water, test before committing to a large amount.

Can I use lava rock from my garden? Technically it’s the same material, but we’d caution against it. Garden lava rock may have been treated with pesticides, fertilisers, or other chemicals that are harmless outdoors but toxic to fish. It can also harbour pathogens from soil contact. Aquarium-grade lava rock is cleaned and safe — the cost difference isn’t worth the risk.

Is lava rock safe for bettas and snails? Yes. The rough texture looks intimidating but the edges are not sharp in the way that chipped ceramic or flint can be. Betta fins and snail bodies are not at risk from lava rock under normal conditions. If you’re particularly cautious, you can lightly sand any very jagged edges with wet/dry sandpaper, but in practice this is rarely necessary.

How does it compare to Dragon Stone and Seiryu? Dragon Stone and Seiryu are primarily chosen for how they look. Lava rock does both: it looks natural and volcanic, but it also works. If your priority is biological filtration and shrimp habitat, lava rock wins outright. I have a question. I live in Hawaii and all the rocks on my property are lava rock. Could I clean a couple of nice ones and put them in my aquarium. Do you think that’s safe. Thank you.

You can buy it pretty much anywhere. Landscaping/hardware stores (or their websites) tend to have the best prices especially if buying in bulk. It is pretty much my favorite substrate because it is the most trouble free in the long run as it provides biological filtration naturally regardless whether you have a filter or not…although it does take a bit of an adjustment if used to sand or even gravel and it tends to need the most cleaning in the beginning as those pores hold a lot of dirt…

I have both lava rock and snails in all my tanks with no problems. I think the rough edges are overrated. I have had more problems with normal rock having rough edges. Besides the edges on lava rock are very easy to smooth if needed but I usually don’t bother…I have had to smooth out some edges on other rocks that I placed in the tank though.

No, lava rock does not supply additional nutrients to plants, however because of their porosity, they will supply water and nutrients in the water column to plants that get their nutrients from the water column when the plants are rooted in the lava rock.

While some lava rock can have rough edges they are rarely if ever sharp, bettas are usually fine with lava rocks. If need be, you could always smooth the edges out…it is very easy to do. You could do it with just a scrub sponge.
