    Description

Hydrocotyle tripartita, popular in aquascaping for its use as a foreground and carpeting plant, produces small distinctive three-lobed leaves on fine creeping stems that spread readily across surfaces. This version comes pre-established on a piece of lava rock, creating a ready-made foreground feature that needs no substrate planting and can be positioned freely anywhere in the tank without disturbing the substrate layout.

It is an adaptable and easy plant. It grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection, though supplementation encourages more compact, dense spreading growth. It creeps by runners and once settled will gradually extend beyond the lava rock surface, spreading naturally along the substrate or onto adjacent rocks and wood.

The plant is pre-established on the lava rock so no further attachment is needed — simply rinse and place in the foreground of the aquarium. The lava rock sinks immediately. Suited to aquariums of 20 litres and above and effective as a compact, spreading foreground accent that adds a distinctive three-lobed leaf texture to the layout.

    Plant Sizes

The image of the plant you'll be receiving is just an example of what you can expect. Each plant is unique and may vary in size and shape, so it won't be an exact match to the photo. If we provide a size guide, keep in mind that it's just an estimate and that plants can vary in size depending on the time of year.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

Can Hydrocotyle tripartita be used as a carpeting plant?

Yes — it is one of the most popular low-tech carpeting plants. Once established it spreads by runners, gradually covering the foreground area.

    Does it need CO2?

Not required, but CO2 supplementation encourages denser, more compact spreading growth. Without it the plant grows more loosely.

Do I need to plant it in substrate?

No — it is pre-established on lava rock. Place it anywhere in the tank. It will spread beyond the rock over time if left to grow freely.

Will it spread on its own?

Yes — it produces runners that creep across the substrate and attach to adjacent surfaces, gradually increasing coverage.

What tank size does it suit?

It works from 20 litres upward as a foreground accent or carpeting plant. It is equally effective in nano set-ups and larger planted tanks.
