Description

Microsorum pteropus Narrow is the slender-leaved form of Java fern, producing long, tapering dark green leaves with a more delicate and graceful appearance than the standard broad variety. Pre-attached to a natural piece of wood, it creates a ready-made aquascape feature that works particularly well alongside other fine-leaved plants where the lighter leaf form integrates more naturally than the broader standard Java fern.

Care is identical to all Java fern varieties — low to medium light, no CO2, tolerant of a wide range of water conditions and temperatures. Growth is slow to moderate but the plant is very long-lived and requires minimal ongoing maintenance. It is generally avoided by herbivorous fish, making it practical in a wide range of community and cichlid set-ups.

The plant is pre-grown onto the wood so no further attachment is needed — simply rinse and place in the aquarium. Never bury the rhizome in substrate. Adventitious plantlets grow from the leaf surfaces and can be removed and attached to new wood once they develop their own roots.

Plant Sizes

The image of the plant you'll be receiving is just an example of what you can expect. Each plant is unique and may vary in size and shape, so it won't be an exact match to the photo. If we provide a size guide, keep in mind that it's just an estimate and that plants can vary in size depending on the time of year.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

How does Narrow differ from standard Java fern?

The Narrow form has longer, slimmer leaves with a more delicate appearance. It pairs well with fine-leaved plants and creates a lighter visual feel in the aquascape.

Does it need CO2?

No — Java fern grows in low to medium light without CO2 injection.

Do I need to attach anything when it arrives?

No — the rhizome is already attached to the wood. Just rinse and place.

How do I propagate it?

Adventitious plantlets grow naturally on the leaf surfaces. Once they have small roots they can be detached and attached to a new piece of wood or rock.

Is it suitable for cichlid tanks?

Yes — Java fern is generally unpalatable to most fish including cichlids, and grows on wood rather than substrate so cannot be uprooted.
