    Description

Nymphaea rhizome bulbs are the dormant planting units of tropical water lilies β€” a diverse genus producing flowers in white, yellow, pink, red, and purple along with large, ornamental floating lily pads. Planted in a pond, large water feature, or open-top aquarium, each bulb grows into a vigorous flowering plant that produces floating surface pads and striking blooms above the waterline during the warmer months.

Water lilies grow in medium to bright light and do best in a nutrient-rich aquatic compost in a planting basket. They are vigorous growers through spring and summer and die back in winter before regrowing from the rhizome in the following season. The floating pads provide valuable shade that keeps the pond cool and suppresses algae growth. Suited to large ponds, water features, and open-top aquariums where the lily can reach the surface.

Plant the rhizome horizontally in nutrient-rich aquatic compost with the growing tip facing upward β€” do not bury the growing tip. Place at the appropriate depth for the variety. Suitable for ponds and large water features of 500 litres and above where the floating pads can spread without crowding.

    Common Questions

What colour will the flowers be?

The rhizome bulbs available are from tropical Nymphaea varieties and flower colours vary. Contact us to confirm which varieties are currently available.

How do I plant the rhizome bulb?

Plant horizontally in aquatic compost with the growing tip facing upward. Never bury the growing tip. Place in a planting basket at the appropriate depth for the variety.

Will it flower in a garden pond in the UK?

Tropical varieties flower in warm summers. They prefer consistently warm conditions and do best in sheltered, sunny positions.

    What happens in winter?

Tropical Nymphaea die back in autumn and can be overwintered as dormant bulbs in damp, frost-free conditions before replanting in spring.

How deep should I plant it in the pond?

Depth depends on the specific variety. Most tropical Nymphaea prefer 30–60 cm of water above the crown.
