Description

Tropica Plant Growth Substrate provides a long-term nutrient reserve for aquarium plants, supporting steady, healthy growth from the roots up.

Made from a natural concentrate of clay and sphagnum, it is placed beneath the gravel layer when setting up an aquarium. These materials slowly release nutrients directly to plant roots while also binding excess nutrients in the lower substrate layer. By limiting nutrients in the water column, it helps reduce the risk of unwanted algae growth.

How to use

  • Lay Plant Growth Substrate in a 1 cm layer directly on the base of the aquarium during setup.

  • Refer to the table below for recommended quantities based on aquarium size.

  • Cover with a minimum 3–4 cm layer of gravel, which acts as a barrier between the substrate and the water.

  • Plant as normal into the gravel. Roots will quickly grow down into the nutrient-rich substrate.

When planting, disturb the substrate as little as possible to prevent clay or sphagnum particles entering the water.

It's only been two weeks since planting the tank so cannot tell if the substrate has had an effect on growth. However, the moneywort I have planted does seem to be appreciating the substrate! One note: I thought I could get away with having a few mm of water in my tank, but that was a big no-no. Make sure that the tank is bone-dry before adding the substrate else your tank will be filled with little bits of organic matter.

Have only just used this product in a new tank, bit Tropica has a very good reputation and lovely plants so am very hopeful that the new tank will be a success. The substrate was very easy to use, and, once covered with a good deep layer of gravel, did not cloud the water after a couple of days settling in. Onwards & upwards!!
