    Description

Hygrophila pinnatifida is one of the most distinctive aquarium plants available, with deeply lobed leaves that are fresh green on the upper surface and rich red-brown on the underside. Unlike most stem plants, it grows epiphytically — attaching to wood and rock — which makes it a natural match for driftwood planting. This piece pairs pinnatifida with aquarium moss on natural wood for a ready-made planted feature with strong visual character.

Hygrophila pinnatifida grows in medium light and benefits from CO2 supplementation to produce its richest colouration and most compact form, though it manages without. Once established on wood it spreads steadily as a creeping stem, gradually increasing its coverage. The moss is easier still and fills in around it naturally, growing without CO2 in low light.

Both plants are pre-established on the driftwood so no further attachment or planting is needed — simply rinse and place in the aquarium. Hygrophila pinnatifida will continue spreading along the wood as it grows. Suited to aquariums of 40 litres and above and particularly effective in Nature Aquarium-style layouts.

    Plant Sizes

The image of the plant you'll be receiving is just an example of what you can expect. Each plant is unique and may vary in size and shape, so it won't be an exact match to the photo. If we provide a size guide, keep in mind that it's just an estimate and that plants can vary in size depending on the time of year.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

    What makes Hygrophila pinnatifida unusual?

Unlike most stem plants, pinnatifida grows epiphytically — attaching to wood and rock like a Java fern. Its deeply lobed leaves are green on top and red-brown underneath, which is distinctive.

    Does it need CO2?

CO2 supplementation produces the richest red colouration and compact growth, but it grows without CO2 in medium light at a slower pace with less intense colour.

Do I need to do anything when it arrives?

No — both plants are pre-established on the driftwood. Just rinse and place.

Will it keep spreading along the wood?

Yes — pinnatifida spreads as a creeping stem, gradually increasing coverage along the wood surface. Trim as needed to control its spread.

    Is it safe for shrimp?

Yes, fully shrimp-safe. The moss provides excellent grazing and both plants are safe for invertebrates.
