Description

Microsorum pteropus Narrow is a slender-leaved form of Java fern with long, fine, strap-like leaves that give it a more elegant and delicate appearance than the standard broad form. The narrowed leaf shape creates a distinctive silhouette and a finer texture that works particularly well when attached to driftwood, creating a natural streaming or flowing effect in the aquarium.

Like all Java fern varieties it requires no substrate planting — the rhizome should be attached to wood or rock using fishing line, thread, or aquarium-safe glue and must not be buried. It grows in low to medium light without CO2 and is very tolerant of a wide range of water conditions, making it one of the most accommodating aquarium plants available.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Microsorum pteropus Narrow suits aquariums from 40 litres upward. Its distinctive slender leaf form makes it a popular choice for creating textural contrast on driftwood arrangements alongside broader-leaved Java fern varieties or other epiphytic plants.

Received 2 beautiful vibrant plants. Exactly as in the image. Plant itself is beautiful, very graceful long slender leaves. Almost grass-like. Works a bit better in a smaller tank than the standard Microsorum. Definitely recommended.

Superb plant! As a beginner to a planted tank I have found aquascaping a steep learning curve, however this plant has looked fabulous from the moment it was "planted". I divided it into 2 and clipped the pieces onto some existing Redmoor wood using clear plastic clips designed for securing plants in substrate. It couldn't have been simpler and the plant has continued to thrive (I wish they were all like this)!

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

What makes the Narrow form different from standard Java fern?

The leaves are significantly more slender and elongated than the standard form, giving a finer, more graceful appearance. Care requirements are identical.

How do I attach it to wood or rock?

Do not bury the rhizome in the substrate. Attach it using fishing line, cotton thread, or aquarium-safe superglue and the roots will grip naturally over time.

Does it need CO2?

No. Java fern Narrow grows without CO2 in low to medium light and is one of the most undemanding aquarium plants available.

Can I mix it with other Java fern forms?

Yes. Mixing Narrow with standard, Windelov, and other forms on the same piece of driftwood creates interesting textural contrast and is a popular aquascaping technique.

How does it propagate?

Plantlets grow naturally on older leaves and eventually detach and anchor themselves to nearby surfaces. No action from the hobbyist is required.
