Description

Limnobium laevigatum is a free-floating aquatic plant from South America producing rosettes of rounded, spongy green leaves on the water surface. Its floating habit, attractive leaf rosettes, and effective nutrient uptake make it a practical and visually appealing choice for planted aquariums — particularly biotope-style set-ups and aquariums where additional surface plant coverage, water flow diffusion, or natural shading is desired.

It is extremely easy and undemanding, growing in low to medium light without any CO2 or fertilisation — it absorbs nutrients directly from the water column. Fast-growing under good conditions, it needs periodic thinning to prevent it covering the entire surface and blocking light to submerged plants. Fish fry and shrimp take shelter and forage among the trailing roots.

Supplied as a Tropica 1-2-GROW! tissue culture cup, this plant arrives completely free from snails, pest algae, and pesticide residue. Remove from the cup, rinse the gel and float on the water surface. Suits aquariums from 20 litres upward — an easy, natural-looking floating plant that is fully shrimp safe and beneficial in community and shrimp aquariums.

Plant Sizes

The image of the plant you'll be receiving is just an example of what you can expect. Each plant is unique and may vary in size and shape, so it won't be an exact match to the photo. If we provide a size guide, keep in mind that it's just an estimate and that plants can vary in size depending on the time of year.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Tissue cultured plants are supplied young and grown in a sterile environment, so they arrive free from snails, algae and pesticide residue. They may look smaller on arrival, but each cup contains multiple plantlets designed to be divided and planted out, where they establish quickly with minimal melt and grow into place.

Customers said these floating plants are "great quality" and grow rapidly, with "roots growing long" within days. Many praised the excellent packaging and nitrate-reducing capabilities. However, some reported disappointing quantity, yellow/brown leaves on arrival, and inconsistent quality. Several noted plants needed time to recover but ultimately thrived, providing excellent cover for fish.

  • Grows like a weed - already having to prune it back. Absorbs nitrates like there's no tomorrow.
  • Within 4 days, the roots have grown so long and new leaves are already sprouting!
  • These plants have multiplied enormously in a very short space of time!

Very pleased with my purchase, it is growing well in my tank, I wasn't sure how well it would do as I have a lid on the aquarium and little light.

Unusually for Aqua Essentials, my experience with this plant was negative. The pot was leaking on receipt and some of the leaves had turned yellow. The quantity in the pack was also disappointing. The last time I purchased Tropica floating plants the pot was jam packed, but on this occasion it was less than half full. Plants that were ok to use are showing signs of recovery after a week.

I wish we would add pictures.. My frogbit within 4 days, the roots have grown so long and new leaves are already sprouting and I've removed any dead leaves today! Loving this site so far and this was my first purchase! It's very green when the dead leaves are removed. Thank you for the frogbit! I'm new to "aquascaping" so I was excited and still excited with more things coming!

There is a lot of plant for you tank here. I bought it and spread it across 3 tanks all around 35L. I'm convinced that it's reduced my nitrates by at least 10ppm of not more. In fact i'm just amazed that my levels have dropped after adding them, very happy as this was one of the reasons I bought it. The other was to provide some canopy for my bettas.

Not terribly impressed with these for the price. Plants very small and the roots were all tangled so separating them out from the pot was difficult. They began to rot after a couple of days in the tank so I ended up throwing them out.

A tiny tub of plants but don't be fooled!!! These plants have multiplied enormously in a very short space of time! The tub is a fabulous concept. No risk of introducing snails, bacteria or any other unwelcome visitors. Just rinse the little plants & pop them in your aquarium! So easy! Fantastic way of growing & safely transporting plants by post! Thank you

I am normally happy to pay a bit more for this range as my last pot of Frogbit was chock - full of healthy plants, but this one was really disappointing.

The plants were very small, pale and there were quite a few dead or dying leaves in this pot - definitely not what I've come to expect from Tropica.

I will give it a week in my tank with some decent feed to see how much of it survives, but I'm not optimistic.

Arrived in super quick time. Well packaged. The plants come in a little pot with a liquid plant food (to be rinsed off before use). The pot is sealed with cellophane. Lovely green leaves & plenty of roots on arrival. Within 5 days the roots have grown beyond belief, & I'm sure the leaves must have multiplied as I don't think they would fit in the pot now!Definitely healthy & fast growing! No snails due to method of production. Excellent service. Thank you...

Excellent little plant and so easy to use.
Take out of the pot, give it a quick wash and drop in the tank. Give it a swish with your finger to separate it. Done.

Product Details

1. Grown in a laboratory

Tissue Cultured Plants are unique in so much as they are grown in a laboratory and not a greenhouse. As a result of this, a cast iron guarantee is offered which is 100% so snails and no pesticides.

2. How to handle them

They're a bit different from potted plants because they're grown in an agae solution that contains nutrients and hormones to encrougage plants to grow. Some agar is liquid, others are more solid depending on what the growers prefers. Regardless once they arrive with you, acclimatise to room temperature and then rinse under luke warm tap water. Then plant up.

3. Pot sizes

Nearly all TC pots are 5cm in diameter and the pots will range in fullness depending on many factors such as the natural growth speed of the plant and the time the grower has held them for. Sometimes the pots are exceptionally full and sometimes not so full - something we cannot control. But either way, they're still really good value when you look at the overall plant mass.
