    Description

Hygrophila siamensis 53B is a particularly compact, slow-growing form of Hygrophila siamensis, prized in the aquascaping hobby for its small, neat internodes and restrained growth habit. Its small oval leaves and tidy, upright stems make it a popular choice for structured midground and background positions where a more controlled Hygrophila is preferred.

It is easy to keep, growing under low light without CO2 injection. Compared to the more vigorous Hygrophila corymbosa varieties, the 53B form grows more slowly, which means less frequent trimming and a more long-lasting, stable planting. It tolerates a wide range of water conditions and is suitable for hobbyists at all levels.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Hygrophila siamensis 53B suits aquariums from 50 litres upward. Its compact, well-behaved form makes it a favourite for Dutch aquarium style plantings and nature-style layouts where a neat, structured stem plant is required without the vigorous growth management of larger Hygrophila varieties.

Customers praised this aquatic plant as a "lovely healthy" fast-growing background option that "grows like the clappers" and provides excellent tank coverage. Most reported plants arrived in perfect condition with prompt delivery. However, some concerns about size consistency and leaf shedding were noted, with one customer finding plants "very small poor quality" compared to previous orders.

    • Forms nice bushy crowns if regularly cut back, makes a great foreground plant
    • Growing exceptionally well. Appears to provide tall background cover quite quickly.
    • Great quality plants as always. Growing like the clappers!

I\'ve been after this plant for ages but I\'d forgotten the name. It grows quite fast in a low tech setup (daily ferts and liquid carbon) and forms nice bushy crowns if regularly cut back, so it makes a great foreground plant in my deep cube tank. The light green colour of the leaves also makes it pop out from the background plants.

As usual all the plants I received from Aqua Essentials were in perfect condition, I cut these back quite hard when I planted them as I wanted to encourage a bushy form and they have already grown back to their original size plus in about 3 weeks.

Nice loooking plant. Its a new one for me but i'm liking it so far. Nice bright green.

As always the plants arrived in tip top condition and were packaged well enough to survive an air raid.

I also want to say that the customer service from AE is second to none. I made a mistake with my shipping options. The mistake was corrected by AE at no additional cost. Superb customer service.

Ordered this plant after seeing it in a picture of someones tank on internet forum.

Wanted a couple of these but only one left in stock at the time but managed to split it down and it is colouring up nicely in my tank with liquid CO2 and looks really well.

Arrived in the Isle of Man the day after ordering. Very well packed. Excellent quality - 8" tall and 12-14 stems per pot meant they could be broken down into two or three bubches. Already grown an inch or so in a week. Would highly recommend this plant.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

What makes Hygrophila siamensis 53B different from standard siamensis?

The 53B form has shorter internodes and grows more slowly and compactly than the standard form, making it more suitable for structured layouts where controlled growth is valued.

    Does it need CO2?

No. It grows well under low light without CO2 injection. Its slower growth rate makes it less dependent on high nutrient inputs than faster-growing Hygrophila varieties.

Is it easy to care for?

Yes. It is one of the easier stem plants to maintain precisely because it grows more slowly and requires less frequent trimming.

What layout styles suit it best?

It is particularly popular in Dutch aquarium style plantings and nature aquarium layouts where a neat, compact stem plant is required.

    How do I propagate it?

Trim stems and replant cuttings. They root readily in the substrate and grow on in the same compact, slow manner as the parent plant.
