    Description

Limnophila heterophylla is a fine-leaved stem plant from Southeast Asia producing delicate, feathery whorls of finely divided leaves along slender stems. Its light, intricate leaf structure gives it a soft, cloud-like quality in the aquarium that is quite distinct from the bolder leaf forms of most background stem plants and highly appreciated in detailed aquascaping compositions.

It performs best with bright light and CO2 supplementation. Without CO2 the fine leaves can become sparse and the plant struggles to maintain good growth. A nutritious substrate or regular liquid fertilisation program supports the steady growth needed to keep the stems full and visually appealing over time.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Limnophila heterophylla suits aquariums from 60 litres upward in a well-lit, CO2-supplemented environment. Used in the background, its feathery texture contrasts beautifully with broader-leafed plants elsewhere in the layout and adds a refined, delicate dimension to the planted composition.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

    Does Limnophila heterophylla need CO2?

Yes. CO2 supplementation is important for keeping the fine whorled leaves full and the growth compact and healthy. Without it the plant tends to become sparse.

What light level does it need?

Bright light is recommended for best growth. Under medium or low light the plant becomes leggy and less attractive over time.

Is it easy to care for?

It is moderately demanding and best suited to hobbyists with experience in CO2-injected planted aquariums. Beginners may find it challenging to maintain well.

    How do I propagate it?

Trim stems and replant the cuttings in the substrate. They root readily and continue growing. Regular trimming keeps the stems bushy and full.

What makes it different from Limnophila aquatica?

Heterophylla is smaller in overall scale β€” its whorls of leaves are finer and more compact than the very large whorls of aquatica, making it suitable for a slightly wider range of aquarium sizes.
